A far cry from New Zealand\u2019s alpine South Island and a North Island that ranges from the arid central desert to the semi-tropical north<em>&#8212;<\/em>-or so I thought! Whereas no<em>w <\/em>there are very few parts of the country that cannot lay a claim to being \u201cMiddle Earth,\u201d from Hobbiton to the Westfold of Rohan, to the Gates of Argonath.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25186\" style=\"width: 122px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/04\/26\/inside-middle-earth-another-shot-from-the-road-trip\/beths-photos-unedited-215\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25186\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25186\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-25186\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Beths-Photos-Unedited-215-112x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Beths-Photos-Unedited-215-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Beths-Photos-Unedited-215-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Beths-Photos-Unedited-215-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Beths-Photos-Unedited-215.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 112px) 100vw, 112px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">credit: B Miller<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although it is not the only landscape&#8212;or more correctly, series of landscapes&#8212;that has influenced my own Fantasy world of Haarth, New Zealand has undoubtedly been a major influencer on my worldbuilding.<\/p>\n<p>For example, not long after <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/heirofnight.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Heir Of Night<\/em> <\/a>was first published, a friend said (something like):\u00a0 <em>\u201cYou know that part in Heir, where Malian and Kalan cross the river into Jaransor and there\u2019s rose briars and thorn scrub on the hillside, and thyme growing wild beneath their horses hooves? I couldn\u2019t help thinking, \u2018that does seem a lot like Central Otago.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23352\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2013\/12\/08\/inside-middle-earth-guess-where\/roadtrip1-146a\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23352\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23352\" class=\"wp-image-23352 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/RoadTrip1-146a-150x112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/RoadTrip1-146a-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/RoadTrip1-146a-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/RoadTrip1-146a.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Central Otago aka the &#8220;Westfold of Rohan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And, of course, it is\u2014although not the part that filmgoers will immediately recognize as the Westfold of Rohan from the early sequences in <em>The Two Towers<\/em> (LoTR2). But <em>fairly<\/em> close by, all the same. So\u2014my friend then demanded\u2014does this mean that all of the Jaransor landscape is pretty much Central Otago?<\/p>\n<p>To which I had to say \u201cno.\u201d There were several other real-world landscapes that influenced my concept of Jaransor. I&#8217;ve spoken before, too, about how the canals of Ij, in <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/gatheringofthelost.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Gathering Of The Lost<\/em><\/a>, were influenced by the khlongs of Bangkok, while the Tenneward and the Argent Vale in Emer were shaped by the area around Nelson, back in New Zealand again, particularly the Waimea Plain and areas such as Upper Moutere.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28988\" style=\"width: 122px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/05\/08\/inside-the-road-trip-middle-earth-skippers-canyon\/skippers-canyon-017a\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28988\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28988\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-28988\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Skippers-Canyon-017a-112x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Skippers-Canyon-017a-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Skippers-Canyon-017a-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Skippers-Canyon-017a.jpg 461w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 112px) 100vw, 112px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Still Otago, but tussock, not thyme&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I say &#8220;shaped&#8221; and &#8220;influenced&#8221; deliberately, though, because all world building in my fantasy writing is an amalgam: of real places that I <em>have<\/em> seen; of places I have not seen but can imagine from descriptions \/ photo \/ film;
