Le Guin passed away last week at the age of 88, after a long and prestigious life in letters. In 2014, she\u00a0 was awarded the (US) National Book Association awarded Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. The citation included the following:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>\u201cFor more than forty years, Le Guin has defied conventions of narrative, language, character, and genre, as well as transcended the boundaries between fantasy and realism to forge new paths for literary fiction\u2026<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Among the nation\u2019s most revered writers of science fiction and fantasy, Le Guin\u2019s fully imagined worlds\u00a0 challenge readers to consider profound philosophical and existential questions about gender, race, the environment, and society. Her boldly experimental and critically acclaimed novels, short stories, and children\u2019s books, written in elegant prose are popular with readers throughout the world.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?attachment_id=35089\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35089\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35089 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Earthsea1-182x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Earthsea1-182x300.jpg 182w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Earthsea1-91x150.jpg 91w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Earthsea1.jpg 304w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a>I wholeheartedly agree with these observations, although as a reader I would say it more simply: I loved\u2014and still love\u2014Ms Le Guin&#8217;s junior classic, <strong><em>A Wizard Of Earthsea<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em> and its two immediate sequels, <strong><em>The Tombs Of Atuan<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>The Farthest Shore:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>for the depth of their characterisation and worldbuilding, and the beautful, spare, powerful writing &#8212; all hallmarks of Ms Le Guin&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2013\/04\/11\/five-books-that-changed-me-warning-not-an-exclusive-list\/left-hand-of-darkness2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19991\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-19991\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Left-Hand-of-Darkness2-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"147\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Left-Hand-of-Darkness2-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Left-Hand-of-Darkness2-91x150.jpg 91w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Left-Hand-of-Darkness2.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" \/><\/a>As an adult, I was blown away by <strong><em>The Left Hand Of Darkness<\/em><\/strong>\u2014for all the reasons included in the citation: elegant writing, outstanding worldbuilding, and the challenge to consider alternate views of \u201c<em>gender, race, the environment, and society.\u201d<\/em> Not to mention the<em> real<\/em> science of her SFF novels and short fiction, including the invention of the ansible, which epitomises the concept of faster-than-light communication in a universe of slower-than-light travel.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Ursula Le Guin has penned some of my favourite quotes on writing, all from her book on the art and craft of literature,\u00a0 <em>Steering The Craft. <\/em>Here are just a few of them:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>\u201cSomebody asked Willie Nelson where he got his songs, and he said, \u2018The air\u2019s full of melodies, you just reach out\u2026\u2019\u00a0 The world\u2019s full of stories, you just reach out.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>\u201c\u2026the story boat is a magic one. It knows its course. The job of the person at the the helm is to help it to find it\u2019s own way to wherever it\u2019s going.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2014\/11\/13\/random-reflections-on-story-storytelling\/steering-the-craft\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27272\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27272 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Steering-The-Craft-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Steering-The-Craft-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Steering-The-Craft-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Steering-The-Craft.jpg 307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe chief duty of a narrative sentence is to lead to the next sentence \u2026 <\/em>[because]<em> the basic function of the narrative sentence is to keep the story going and keep the reader going with it.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When Ms Le Guin received the National Book Association Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, I could think of few more worthy recipients. When the news of her death came through last week, I felt a profound sense of intellectual and emotional loss.<\/p>\n<p>She has left a tremendous legacy and an equally significant gap in our literary and cultural ranks. And although I can read and reread her writing, I shall miss simply knowing she&#8217;s there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ursula K.
