While by no means exhaustive, the entries included &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsignal.com\/archives\/2011\/12\/guest_post_helen_lowe_on_having_fun_with_epic_fantasy_making_the_grand_tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Making the Grand Tour<\/a>&#8221; (aka the Road Journey), the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsignal.com\/archives\/2011\/12\/guest_post_helen_lowe_on_having_fun_with_epic_fantasy_the_band_of_brothers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Band of Brothers<\/a>&#8221; and\u00a0 the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsignal.com\/archives\/2011\/12\/guest_post_helen_lowe_on_having_fun_with_epic_fantasy_the_soul-sucking_sword\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soul-Sucking Sword<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, SF Signal closed its e-doors a few years back, but my love of epic fantasy has continued and there&#8217;s plenty more examples of its classic elements to consider, together with some of the books where they appear &#8212; my favourites that is, rather than an exhaustive list. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>A contemporary term for those classic elements is &#8220;tropes.&#8221; Originally &#8220;tropes&#8221; was a terms for figures of speech such as metaphor and irony (among many others.) Now, though, it has come to include &#8220;commonly recurring <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Literary technique\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Literary_technique\">literary<\/a> and <a title=\"Rhetorical device\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhetorical_device\">rhetorical devices<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-cuddon_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trope_(literature)#cite_note-cuddon-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> <a title=\"Motif (narrative)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motif_(narrative)\">motifs<\/a> or <a title=\"Clich\u00e9\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clich%C3%A9\">clich\u00e9s<\/a> in creative works.&#8221; (Wikipedia) <sup id=\"cite_ref-trope_mw_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30390\" style=\"width: 152px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/10\/30\/fantasy-heroines-that-rock-my-world-10-on-sf-signal-sisterhood-is-powerful-part-1\/ladies-of-mandrigyn\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30390\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30390\" class=\"wp-image-30390\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Ladies-of-Mandrigyn-180x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Ladies-of-Mandrigyn-180x300.jpg 180w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Ladies-of-Mandrigyn-90x150.jpg 90w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Ladies-of-Mandrigyn.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barbara Hambly&#8217;s &#8216;The Ladies of Mandrigyn&#8217; &#8212; a favourite &#8220;band of sisters&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The epic &#8220;grand tour&#8221;, &#8220;band of brothers&#8221; and artefacts such as the &#8220;soul-sucking sword&#8221; are examples of such devices or &#8212;gasp!&#8212; cliches that characterize epic fantasy. But I&#8217;m sure I can find a few more to share with you. For me, they&#8217;re part of what I love about these kind of stories, which is why I&#8217;ve included a goodly amount in <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/wallofnight.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall of Night<\/a> series. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>I would argue, of course, that it&#8217;s not the presence or absence of these classic elements that define the story, but what you do with them&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But that <em>is<\/em> another story!
