Later in the Arthurian cycle, the wise counselor role is sometimes assumed by Vivian, the Lady of the Lake, and the enchantress Nimue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-36082 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Goose-Girl_The-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Goose-Girl_The-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Goose-Girl_The-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Goose-Girl_The.jpg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/>In fairytale and folklore, the mentor and wise counselor may also take the form of an animal companion, such as the horse Falada in <em>The\u00a0Goose Girl<\/em> fairytale or the cat in <em>Puss and Boots<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, too, the mentor figure is drawn from the fairy realm. Although this includes Merlin, Vivian, and Nimue, another famous example is the fairy godmother in <em>Cinderella<\/em>&#8212;and godmothers plural in <em>Sleeping Beauty<\/em>, although its the final one that counts in changing the death spell into the hundred years&#8217; sleep.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35802\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35802\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-35802\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gandalf_Glamdring-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gandalf_Glamdring-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gandalf_Glamdring-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gandalf_Glamdring.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35802\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gandalf the Grey in The Lord of the Rings film<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Given its all-pervasive nature, therefore, its unsurprising the &#8220;mentor&#8221; figure is often present in epic fantasy as well. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>In terms of classic mentor figures, Gandalf the Grey in <strong><em>The Hobbit<\/em> <\/strong>and <em><strong>The Lord of the Ring<\/strong>s<\/em> and Brom in Christopher Paolini&#8217;s <strong><em>Eragon<\/em><\/strong>, both fit the bill.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-36092\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Daughter-of-the-Empire-98x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"98\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Daughter-of-the-Empire-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Daughter-of-the-Empire-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Daughter-of-the-Empire.jpg 311w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/>Although less powerful, Keyoke and Nacoya (Mara&#8217;s nurse turned First Counselor) in Janny Wurts and Raymond E Feist&#8217;s <strong><em>Daughter of the Empire<\/em><\/strong> also represent the tradition. Other famous examples include Belgarath the Sorcerer in the <strong>Belgariad<\/strong>, Moiraine in the early <strong>Wheel Of Time<\/strong> novels, and Count Brass in Michael Moorcock&#8217;s <strong>Chronicles of the Runestaff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-35264 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/A-Princess-of-the-Chameln-88x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"88\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/A-Princess-of-the-Chameln-88x150.jpg 88w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/A-Princess-of-the-Chameln-177x300.jpg 177w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/A-Princess-of-the-Chameln.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 88px) 100vw, 88px\" \/>I can&#8217;t overlook Albus Dumbledore in the <strong>Harry Potter<\/strong> series, but I would also cite Luthe in Robin McKinley&#8217;s <em><strong>The Hero and the Crown<\/strong><\/em>, Deth in Patricia McKillip&#8217;s <strong><em>The Riddlemaster of Hed<\/em><\/strong>, and Aidris&#8217;s hidden grandmother in <em><strong>A Princess Of The Chameln<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-35233 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Paladin_The_v2-93x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"93\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Paladin_The_v2-93x150.jpg 93w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Paladin_The_v2-185x300.jpg 185w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Paladin_The_v2.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 93px) 100vw, 93px\" \/>Jasnar Kholin is clearly a mentor and preceptress to Shallan in Brandon Sanderson&#8217;s <strong>Stormlight Archive<\/strong> series. Yet Shoka, in CJ Cherryh&#8217;s <strong><em>The Paladin<\/em><\/strong>, may qualify in his role as swordmaster to Taizu, but his motivations are so murky otherwise that I feel he&#8217;s a suspect candidate overall.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, Nahadoth in NK Jemisin&#8217;s <strong><em>The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms<\/em> <\/strong>occupies a similarly uneasy role: he is both the sworn enemy of Yeine&#8217;s Arameri family, but must teach her the secrets of both her personal and family&#8217;s power.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-8899 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/American_gods-99x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/American_gods-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/American_gods-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/American_gods.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 99px) 100vw, 99px\" \/>Sometimes, too, the mentor may turn out to be undertaking that role for reasons that entirely benefit him or herself as opposed to the mentee. A classic example of this is Mr Wednesday in Neil Gaiman&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><em>American Gods<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-29045 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Godmother-97x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Godmother-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Godmother-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Godmother.jpg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 97px) 100vw, 97px\" \/>Merlin was far more human and less magical in Mary Stewart&#8217;s Arthurian series than in the legends, but he still fulfilled the traditional mentor role to Arthur in <strong><em>The Hollow Hills<\/em><\/strong>. When it comes to fairy or otherworldly mentors, however, Felicity Fortune in Elizabeth Ann Scarborough&#8217;s <strong>Godmother<\/strong> series is a quintessential example.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-35707 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Forgotten-Beasts-of-Eld-112x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Forgotten-Beasts-of-Eld-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Forgotten-Beasts-of-Eld-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Forgotten-Beasts-of-Eld.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 112px) 100vw, 112px\" \/>Another valid contender, imho, is the immortal, River, in Cate Tiernan&#8217;s <strong><em>Immortal Beloved<\/em><\/strong>, as is the witch, Maelga, in McKillip&#8217;s <em><strong>The Forgotten Beasts of Eld<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-36083 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/To-The-Haunted-Mountains-93x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"93\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/To-The-Haunted-Mountains-93x150.jpg 93w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/To-The-Haunted-Mountains-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/To-The-Haunted-Mountains.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 93px) 100vw, 93px\" \/>The Forgotten Beasts of Eld<\/em> also gives readers a magical animal mentor in the character of the talking boar, Cyrin. In Tolkien&#8217;s <em>The Hobbit<\/em>, a thrush tells Bard where to aim his arrow so it will find the only weak spot on the armoured body of Smaug the Dragon.<\/p>\n<p>And one of my favourite animal mentors is Nisana, the AEldra of the cat kin, who trains the exiled Princess Ylia in Ru Emerson&#8217;s <strong><em>To The Haunted Mountains<\/em><\/strong> (and Nedao trilogy.)<\/p>\n<h3>You Know What Follows Next: Mentors In My Own Books \ud83d\ude09<\/h3>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4381 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/thornspellcover_small1-106x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/thornspellcover_small1-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/thornspellcover_small1.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 106px) 100vw, 106px\" \/>Thornspell<\/em>, which is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the prince, has several mentor characters. The primary one is Balisan, the prince&#8217;s swordmaster and protector. The primary mentors for Malian are the minstrel, Haimyr, the Honor Captain, Asantir, and the dead hero, Yorindesarinen. Myr, the Daughter of Blood of the title, has a former governess-turned-duenna called Mistress Ise, to whom she has always looked for moral guidance.
