(Btw, I&#8217;ve borrowed this phrase from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/entertainment\/meetings-with-a-remarkable-man-thomas-pakenham-31520204.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Pakenham&#8217;s book of the same name<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I went down to Peel Forest, just to the south of Canterbury&#8217;s Rangitata river to check out some of the remnant forest giants, specifically totara, kahikatea, and matai&#8212;and they were well well and truly worth the trip, imho. The Peel Forest trees are only still with us (largely) because of the foresight of a <em>&#8220;&#8230;visiting British MP, Arthur Mills&#8230;[who in 1881]&#8230;was so horrified by the forest devastation he bought 16 hectares of un-cut forest.
