{"id":36766,"date":"2019-06-24T06:30:42","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T18:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=36766"},"modified":"2019-06-23T14:57:23","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T02:57:23","slug":"thankfulness-week-24-30-june-what-are-you-thankful-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2019\/06\/24\/thankfulness-week-24-30-june-what-are-you-thankful-for\/","title":{"rendered":"Thankfulness Week 24-30 June: What Are You Thankful For?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I learned that the NZ mental health project Be Great has designated June 24-30 as Thankfulness Week.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons why are summarised in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.begreat.co.nz\/nz-thankfulness-week\">The Thankfulness Project 2019 page<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.begreat.co.nz\/nz-thankfulness-week\">Be Great<\/a> website:<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-36768\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Thankfulness-Logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>To lift spirits in the coldest darkest week of the year<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003366;\">June 24 &#8211; 30 is one of the lowest daylight hour weeks in New Zealand, a cold and dark time when people can struggle with depression. The goal is to help people in this time by inspiring them to think of all the good things there are about being alive as opposed to the cold and dark time of year it is.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The way I clicked onto the project, though, was from seeing an advertisement in my local newspaper (I know, so old school! \ud83d\ude09 ), heralding the week with the header question:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat Are You Thankful For?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve known about the idea of \u2018thankfulness\u2019 and the connection to mental health for some time and have found it a useful exercise to occasionally take a moment of quietness \u201camid the noise and haste\u201d (to quote Max Ehrmann\u2019s <em>Desiderata<\/em>) and focus on the \u201cgood stuff\u201d, aka those aspects of life and my experience of it that I\u2019m thankful for.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4266\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4266\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4266\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Earthquake-Witness-009-150x112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Earthquake-Witness-009-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Earthquake-Witness-009-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Earthquake-Witness-009-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This used to be my gym<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I probably did it more regularly immediately after Christchurch\u2019s February 22<sup>nd<\/sup> 2011 earthquake, because it felt important to stay focused on the \u201chalf full\u201d side of the glass, when there was so much \u201chalf empty\u201d all around. Although this state has gradually eased, as you\u2019d expect, over the past eight years, the need to stay grounded and remind myself of the plus side did continue well beyond the immediate event (a bit like the years of aftershocks, lol.)<\/p>\n<p>In terms of continuation, those who&#8217;ve been through similar experiences will not be surprised to learn that the \u201cdisaster and heroic\u201d phase was succeeded by what I described as the \u201cgrunge\u201d transition of \u201ceverything broken, very little happening\/changing\u201d, then the subsequent iterations of \u201crepair\/rebuild\u201d and \u201crecovery\u201d, which were characterized by an unrelenting grimness and grind of bureaucracy, insurance \u201csettlements\u201d (ha!), and negotiating the physical realities of the repair\/rebuild process on a citywide scale.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3852\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3852\" class=\"wp-image-3852 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Earthquake-1-22-25Feb2011-019-150x112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Earthquake-1-22-25Feb2011-019-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Earthquake-1-22-25Feb2011-019-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Earthquake-1-22-25Feb2011-019-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Friends &amp; neighbours, being the solution 2011<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So as you\u2019re probably guessing, reminding oneself of the positives, starting with being alive immediately post February 22<sup>nd<\/sup>(!) was an important part of keeping going. It can be a little challenging to do it in a public way without seeming saccharine, so usually it\u2019s a private exercise, but since this is Thankfulness Week, I thought getting on board with a post was a good way of showing support.<\/p>\n<p>The exercise set out in the advertisement was to <em>\u201clook around and think of 10-20 things you are thankful for, such as life, family, friends, you, your body, this country, your vocation\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My list actually has a pretty long tail depending on how far I did down in terms of detail, but for today I\u2019m keeping it to the big hits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_36222\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36222\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-36222\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/River-Ocean-Sky...-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/River-Ocean-Sky...-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/River-Ocean-Sky....jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-36222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">River, Ocean, Sky&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My life partner, who is smart, funny, an all-round good guy, and made of awesome #justsayin\u2019 J<\/li>\n<li>Family \u2013 both my own immediate family but also my extended whanau, which includes my partner\u2019s family and a network of cousins on both sides<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Friends! So many of you and so mighty fine. Sometimes, like family, we come and go, connect and reconnect, but friends are definitely a big part of what makes my world go around.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Living in a relatively peaceful, relatively sane \u2013 most of the time anyway! \u2013 country. I say this while fully acknowledging the recent mosque attacks here in Christchurch which saw the mass murder of 51 people and serious injury of another fifty more. Nonetheless, I still believe the \u201crelatively peaceful, relatively sane\u201d remains true overall and that\u2019s actually a pretty big deal on the thankfulness scale.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>As I said in my <a href=\"https:\/\/skiffyandfanty.com\/blogposts\/blogseries\/monthofjoy\/joylowecolorblueend\/\">Month of Joy post for Skiffy and Fanty<\/a> a while back, \u201cthe colour blue\u201d \u2013 particularly as it manifests in sea, rivers, and sky \u201call around us\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_31467\" style=\"width: 123px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31467\" class=\"wp-image-31467 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yaldhurst-Gum_3-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yaldhurst-Gum_3-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yaldhurst-Gum_3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yaldhurst-Gum_3.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Very big trees<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As those who follow this blog *may* have picked up, nature in all its forms is something I consistently appreciate, from the small wonders and delights of my garden, to trees, wildlife, mountains\u2026<\/li>\n<li>The cosmos, ie stars, planets, space and how it all works \u2013 as much as we know \u2013 is probably an extension of nature as per this planet, but I feel it\u2019s sufficiently distinct to get its own category, especially as I can then add in the fascination of space exploration and Hubble telescopes et all without creating a separate category<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>As I also hinted in the Month of Joy post, writing and storytelling is a pretty big deal in the Life of Helen and something I value highly \u2013 even if it does kick my butt on a far too regular basis! &#8212; as I also value those who are part of the larger writing \u2018whanau\u2019, including fellow writers, my agent and her team, publishers and their teams, and last but very far from least, readers.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>I am, of course, an avid reader myself so books, but also music, are big ticket items on the \u2018thankfulness\u2019 list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_20389\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20389\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-20389\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Fantail-150x112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Fantail-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Fantail-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Fantail.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Very small birds &#8212; Fantail; credit, B Miller<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m going to stop at ten, but also cheat a little because I\u2019m going to say food (not least, having enough of it, most of the time, which is no small thing), both making it and sharing with others (back to family and friends, aye!) and <em>also<\/em> wine, especially to have with the food \u2013 which is a cunning 5 or 6 items in one. \ud83d\ude09<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anyway, that\u2019s my list!
