The breed for which Emer is famous?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>\u201cThe finest in all Emer,\u201d said Hamar. \u201cBut that\u2019s because Jarna trained him.\u201d He grinned at the lad holding the horse, and Carick, looking more closely, realized that the boy was in fact the girl squire who had formed part of his escort to Normarch.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>\u201cHello,\u201d he said, and the girl nodded back. \u201cDid you really train him? What\u2019s his name?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>For a long moment he thought Jarna was not going to answer, but then she met his eyes, a quick shy look. \u201cMadder,\u201d she said finally. \u201cIt\u2019s another way of saying \u2018red.\u2019\u201d Her voice was low-pitched, almost husky, and with a cap over her thick plait, she was broad-shouldered and flat-chested enough to pass as a boy. She smiled now and stroked the horse\u2019s nose again. \u201cWe all have a gift for horses, in my family. That\u2019s what my grandfather says.
