The\u00a0About The Characters<\/a>\u00a0post series focuses on the minor characters in\u00a0The Wall Of Night<\/a>\u00a0series, in large part because:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s the presence of the smaller characters that \u201cmakes\u201d a story, creating texture around the main points of view.\u201d

Initially, the series focused exclusively on characters from\u00a0The Heir of Night<\/em><\/a>, but now I\u2019m continuing on with minor characters from both\u00a0The Gathering Of The Lost<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Daughter of Blood<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 in alphabetical order, of course!<\/p>\n
(The quotes, together with the covers, indicate the books in which the character appears.)<\/p>\n

Jarna:<\/strong> an Emerian knight-in-training, hailing from the Northern March of Emer<\/span><\/p>\n

Carick nodded, looking around the forge and then back to the horse, which was a tall, red roan destrier, bred to carry the weight of its own armor as well as that of a knight into battle. \u201cIs this a great horse? The breed for which Emer is famous?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
\u201cThe finest in all Emer,\u201d said Hamar. \u201cBut that\u2019s because Jarna trained him.\u201d He grinned at the lad holding the horse, and Carick, looking more closely, realized that the boy was in fact the girl squire who had formed part of his escort to Normarch.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
\u201cHello,\u201d he said, and the girl nodded back. \u201cDid you really train him? What\u2019s his name?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
For a long moment he thought Jarna was not going to answer, but then she met his eyes, a quick shy look. \u201cMadder,\u201d she said finally. \u201cIt\u2019s another way of saying \u2018red.\u2019\u201d Her voice was low-pitched, almost husky, and with a cap over her thick plait, she was broad-shouldered and flat-chested enough to pass as a boy. She smiled now and stroked the horse\u2019s nose again. \u201cWe all have a gift for horses, in my family. That\u2019s what my grandfather says. Although Hamar has the gift, too,\u201d she added.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
Hamar shook his head. \u201cNo. I\u2019m good with horses, but you are something more, Jarn.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
This time Jarna did just shrug and look away, but Carick noticed that she flushed as well.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually both horses had adjusted to the enclosed space and the movement of the ship, but Kalan had still needed to spend a great deal of time with them, especially when a squall blew up a day out of Port Farewell. \u201cBecause Jarna,\u201d he murmured to the roan destrier now, \u201cwould curse me in this life and into the next if I let any harm come to you.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
