I would argue, however, that it is not <em>epic<\/em> fantasy and therefore I am not departing from my writing regime &#8212; because, dear readers, I not only fully intend to read it but to do so soon. In fact, I must do so\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201c \u2018Must\u2019,\u201d you may cry, \u201cwhat is this \u2018must\u2019 you speak of?\u201d A not unreasonable plaint given my recent words, but the reason is simply this: on 1 April I hope to interview Kristin on Supernatural Underground for the <a href=\"http:\/\/supernaturalunderground.blogspot.com\/2020\/12\/happy-new-year-ushering-in-year-of.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cMagic Systems in Fantasy\u201d post series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While I could undertake such an interview on the strength of having read <em>Graceling<\/em>, <em>Fire<\/em>, and <em>Bitterblue<\/em>, I still feel that it will be a more satisfying interview for all involved if I\u2019ve read <em>Winterkeep<\/em> as well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14409\" style=\"width: 156px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14409\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14409\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Bitterblue3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Bitterblue3.jpg 146w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Bitterblue3-99x150.jpg 99w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Besides, there is the beginning of a tradition to consider since I interviewed Kristin in 2012 as well, when <em>Bitterblue <\/em>was published \u2013 which you can read <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2012\/06\/21\/an-interview-with-kristin-cashore-author-of-bitterblue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, it\u2019s also tradition for me to include the back cover synopsis, so here goes:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Something is rotten in the heart of Winterkeep\u2026<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39006\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Winterkeep_KristinCashore_Dial-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"242\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Four years after the events of<\/em> Bitterblue<em>, a new land has been discovered to the east: Torla, and the closest nation to Monsea is Winterkeep. Winterkeep is a land of miracles, a democratic republic run by people who like each other, where people speak to telepathic sea creatures, adopt telepathic foxes as pets, and fly across the sky in ships attached to balloons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>But when Bitterblue\u2019s envoys to Winterkeep drown under suspicious circumstances, she and Giddon and her half-sister, Hava, set off to discover the truth \u2013 putting both Bitterblue\u2019s life and Giddon\u2019s heart to the test when Bitterblue is kidnapped. Giddon believes she has drowned, leaving him and Hava to solve the mystery of Winterkeep.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Lovisa Cavenda is the teenage daughter of a powerful Scholar and Industrialist (the opposing governing parties) with a fire inside her that is always hungry, always nearly about to make something happen. She is the key to everything, but only if she can figure out what\u2019s going on before anyone else, and only if she\u2019s willing to transcend the person she\u2019s been all her life.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sounds fun, doesn\u2019t it?
