North<\/p><\/div>\n

Last week I commenced revisiting the blog backlist with a post on “The Magic Of Winter Worlds”<\/a>, first posted on 21 July 2012.<\/p>\n

The 2012 post was sparked by the poem North<\/em><\/strong>, which was posted on 10 July, also in 2012. North<\/em> is a midwinter poem, inspired by a journey I made to the far north of Sweden.<\/p>\n

I am intending to refeature poems as part of the Backlist series, and since this is the week of winter solstice here in NZ (and in the southern hemisphere) I feel it’s exactly the right time to post it again. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

homes<\/span>
\nwhite timbered in the south<\/span>
\ngive way to brown-red<\/span>
\nin mid and north \u2013<\/span>
\navenues of birch trees<\/span>
\nserried lakes<\/span><\/p>\n

an elk<\/span>
\nruns through deep winter<\/span>
\nthe night train flares<\/span>
\nthrough cuttings \u2013<\/span>
\ninferno cast across jagged firs<\/span>
\nfrozen earth<\/span><\/p>\n

rushes headlong<\/span>
\ninto spring \u2013 a pied crow<\/span>
\nsolitary<\/span>
\nabove a grey field
\n.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
