For symmetry, I thought you might be interested in rereading the response and its springboard into influences on my own writing again &#8212; so here it is!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-39354\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/The-Expanse_poster-100x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/The-Expanse_poster-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/The-Expanse_poster.jpg 183w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/>&#8212;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u201cWriters Are Thieves\u201d\u2014aka Influences on Story: <em>from<\/em> October 20, 2011<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Yesterday, in our interview\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/10\/19\/an-interview-with-daniel-abraham-author-of-the-dragons-path\/\">here<\/a>, Daniel Abraham said that:\u00a0<em>\u201cMore than [being] readers, writers are thieves.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Fellow author and friend,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/maryvictoria.net\/\">Mary Victoria<\/a>, commented:\u00a0<em>\u201d \u2026 yes, yes, yes. We use a bit of this and a bit of that. We borrow from each other, from the common store of history and myth. We even raid our own memories \u2026 nothing is sacred!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Of course I had to respond that I preferred the word \u201cmagpies\u201d to \u201cthieves\u201d (\u00a0&#x1f609;\u00a0) but the principle is the same. There was a synergy for me in this discussion, because only the day before I had been at Christchurch\u2019s South library, talking about\u2014amongst other things\u2014influences on my work. Or in other words, about all the treasure trove of ideas, artefacts, and experiences over the years that had caused my magpie self to think: \u201cShiny!\u201d Or \u201cBright! Or \u201cGleamy, and Sheeny, and Glittery!\u201d (I was going to say \u201csparkly\u201d, but you know,\u00a0<em>those<\/em>\u00a0vampires\u2014just can\u2019t go there.) The thievery Daniel Abraham referred to yesterday was of those elements of literature that delight you a reader\u2014and promptly want in your own stories. And as I said in my<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/02\/10\/influences-on-story-3-other-writing\/\">\u00a0Influences of Story post on February 3rd<\/a>, other writing is undoubtedly an influence on any writer\u2019s development. Diving into the vast sargasso sea of literature always sparks ideas and \u2018what ifs\u2019, and on February 3 I showed how this process might work using the example of Hilaire Belloc\u2019s poem,\u00a0<em>Tarantella<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4378\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Thornspell-cover-illustration-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Thornspell-cover-illustration-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Thornspell-cover-illustration-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Thornspell-cover-illustration-723x1024.jpg 723w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Other sources for magpie gleaning that I mentioned in my library talk included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Fairytales, folk stories, myths and legends. By way of example I discussed\u00a0<em>Thornspell<\/em>\u00a0as a retelling of the\u00a0<em>Sleeping Beauty<\/em>\u00a0fairytale from the perspective of the prince, and also how I drew on the\u00a0<em>Parsifal<\/em>\u00a0cycle to inform the backdrop of the story. I also spoke of the way in which\u00a0<em>The Heir of Night<\/em>\u00a0was influenced by the classic stories of Greek and Norse myth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">History\u2014has always informed my work, as in the Renaissance era, Holy Roman Empire influence on the world building in\u00a0<em>Thornspell<\/em>, or the way in which\u00a0<em>Heir<\/em>\u00a0draws on history\u2019s social, cultural, and economic conflicts, both\u00a0<em>within<\/em>\u00a0societies as well as\u00a0<em>between\u00a0<\/em>nations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The space programme, astronomy, and the environment\u2014all influenced my love of science fiction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Narrative Poetry\u2014you just can\u2019t beat it: from those great classics\u00a0<em>The Iliad\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Odyssey<\/em>, and the medieval\u00a0<em>Morte d\u2019Arthur<\/em>, but also the Anglo-Saxon\u00a0<em>Beowulf<\/em>, Chaucer\u2019s\u00a0<em>Canterbury Tales<\/em>\u00a0from the late Middle Ages, and Spenser\u2019s\u00a0<em>Faerie Queene<\/em>\u00a0or Milton\u2019s\u00a0<em>Paradise Los<\/em>t from the early modern period.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Sense of Place\u2014another influence that I have discussed in two recent posts,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/10\/06\/sense-of-place\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/10\/08\/sense-of-place-2\/\">here<\/a>, and also last year,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/07\/19\/influences-on-story-2\/\">here<\/a>.
