On several occasions now, I\u2019ve also talked about the importance of the writing break to assist in wrangling narrative roadblocks, whether small or large\u2014most recently as a coda to <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2021\/10\/11\/inside-the-writing-life-of-puzzles-and-gardens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my post on liking puzzles<\/a>, as well as in relation to <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2021\/07\/05\/inside-the-writing-life-the-authorial-break\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the authorial (coffee) break<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34784\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34784\" class=\" wp-image-34784\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/First-brew...-300x278.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/First-brew...-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/First-brew...-150x139.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/First-brew...-768x712.jpg 768w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/First-brew...-1024x949.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ah, those coffee breaks&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And when I interviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/supernaturalunderground.blogspot.com\/2021\/02\/an-interview-with-courtney-schafer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Courtney Schafer<\/strong> <strong>on the Supernatural Underground<\/strong><\/a>, also earlier this year, I nodded heartfelt concurrence when she mentioned that writing scenes comprising multiple point-of-view characters is always a tough gig.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36221\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Supelogo_2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In writing the conclusion to <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/wallofnight.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Wall Of Night<\/strong><\/a> series, there is no shortage of scenes that involve multiple point-of-view characters and\/or major secondary characters as well. So an important aspect, even when all the characters are cooperating fully with the writing process, is doing all the relevant characters justice. And not unlike driving a team of horses, it\u2019s vital not to get their storylines entangled. So even at the best of times, authorial concentration is required.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-36405\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Helen_Lowe_TWON_fan_495w-300x224.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Helen_Lowe_TWON_fan_495w-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Helen_Lowe_TWON_fan_495w-150x112.png 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Helen_Lowe_TWON_fan_495w.png 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The writing process gets even trickier when the characters, the narrative, or the Muses are not playing ball. As mentioned in the Puzzles post, sometimes the roadblocks are simply a case of the author not seeing the writing forest for the individual trees.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39320\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39320\" class=\"wp-image-39320 \" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Puzzles_Magazines-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Puzzles_Magazines-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Puzzles_Magazines-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Puzzles_Magazines-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Puzzles_Magazines-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mindgames &amp; puzzles&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At other times, characters can and do refuse to cooperate, like Thanir earlier this year and the Earl away back when I was first writing <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/heirofnight.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Heir of Night<\/em><\/a>. In a way, Kalan and Myr, when writing <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/daughterofblood.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Daughter of Blood<\/em><\/a>, also fitted that bill, because although the original story arc always had them falling in love, no matter what I did as author, they simply refused to do so.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30067\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30067\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30067\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HeirofNight_new_small-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HeirofNight_new_small.jpg 186w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HeirofNight_new_small-93x150.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In short, despite best-laid plans, the author was required to adapt to the imperatives of the story and the characters. In all these cases, too, the noncooperation happens for a reason, or sometimes a number of reasons\u2014which eventually become manifest when I really pay attention to the \u2018voice\u2019 of the story.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11181\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11181\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11181\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK3-190x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK3-190x300.jpg 190w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK3-95x150.jpg 95w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK3-651x1024.jpg 651w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/bigheirofnightMMUK3.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UK\/AU\/NZ<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Some of these reasons include:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Avoiding \u201cby-the-numbers\u201d storytelling or \u201ccardboard cutout\u201d characters.<\/em><\/strong> The long-ago problem with the Earl of Night, for example, was that as initially conceived he was a stereotypical tyrannical father figure. The Muses, though, weren\u2019t having a bar of that, and the narrative simply wouldn\u2019t progress until I engaged with Tasarion as a real person.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30087\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30087\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30087\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/GatheringofLost_new_small-187x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/GatheringofLost_new_small.jpg 187w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/GatheringofLost_new_small-94x150.jpg 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30087\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Not crossing the same storytelling stream twice.<\/em> <\/strong>This is a real risk in a big book where there are multiple point-of-view characters, all of whom have been exposed to a variety of physical and \u00a0magical, personal and political conflicts, throughout the narrative to date. So it can be all-too-easy to write \u201caction hero type A\u201d, or \u201cbattle sequence B\u201d, just to move the narrative forward.<\/p>\n<p>Again, though, the Muses won\u2019t stand for that sort of malarkey, and the roadblock is only resolved when I own my <em>mea culpa<\/em> and find a way to write the conflict that is fresh and also authentic, both to the characters and the storyline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-35895\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GatheringOfLost_Blue-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GatheringOfLost_Blue-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GatheringOfLost_Blue-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/GatheringOfLost_Blue.jpg 344w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So with Kalan and Myr, for example, a small part of the roadblock associated with their arc was that the WALL series already had a \u201cstarcrossed lovers\u201d storyline, i.e. Audin and Ghiselaine in <a href=\"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/gatheringofthelost.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Gathering of the Lost<\/em><\/a>. Doing the same thing again didn\u2019t feel right and persisting (because &#8220;the plan&#8221;) increasingly struck writing resistance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29736\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29736\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29736\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Daughter-of-Blood_Front-Cover-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"daughter-of-blood-by-helen-lowe\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Daughter-of-Blood_Front-Cover-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Daughter-of-Blood_Front-Cover-93x150.jpg 93w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Daughter-of-Blood_Front-Cover.jpg 409w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Maintaining Authenticity:<\/em><\/strong> Another aspect of the roadblock was that Kalan\u2019s relationship with Jarna (again, in <em>Gathering<\/em>) also had starcrossed elements. In addition, and arguably more importantly, it felt really out-of-character for Kalan to bounce straight from one relationship to another. Constancy and faithkeeping are both really important aspects of \u201cwho he is\u201d, so the story has to reflect that, as well as continuing to shape him through ongoing events.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29607\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29607\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29607\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daughter-of-Blood-by-Helen-Lowe-190x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daughter-of-Blood-by-Helen-Lowe-190x300.png 190w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daughter-of-Blood-by-Helen-Lowe-95x150.png 95w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daughter-of-Blood-by-Helen-Lowe-650x1024.png 650w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daughter-of-Blood-by-Helen-Lowe.png 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UK\/AU\/NZ<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The final aspect of the Kalan-Myr roadblock, one that required considerable wrangling to resolve, was that the <em>Daughter <\/em>story is primarily about duty and honor, amid a sequence of life-and-death events that don\u2019t allow leisure for starcrossed love.
