I understand the work was originally published in two parts, I believe subtitled <em>My Father Bleeds History<\/em> (1986) and\u00a0 <em>And Here My Troubles Began <\/em>(1992), respectively.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40116\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Maus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Maus.jpg 275w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Maus-103x150.jpg 103w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Maus-206x300.jpg 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you&#8217;re probably all aware, in early January, a country school board in Tennessee removed the book from its curriculum, allegedly for reasons of content and age appropriateness.<\/p>\n<p>Given this is the only graphic novel to win the Pulitzer Prize, I decided this was clearly a book I needed to read for myself and make up my own mind about the merits, or otherwise, of the school board&#8217;s position. Unlike one member of the board who <em>&#8220;&#8230;stated that he had not \u201cseen the book [or] read the whole book,\u201d instead admitting that he\u2019d only \u201cread the reviews.\u201d &#8220;<\/em> (Source: <em>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/maus-becomes-bestseller-after-tennessee-school-ban-180979499\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Banned by Tennessee School Board, \u2018Maus\u2019 Soars to the Top of Bestseller Charts&#8221;<\/a>,<\/em> McGreevy, N., <strong>Smithsonian Magazine<\/strong>, February 2, 2022.)<\/p>\n<p>The Smithsonian Magazine article summarises the content of <em>Maus<\/em>, as well as the recent controversy, but here&#8217;s the GoodReads summary as well:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;<span id=\"freeText494976869318952740\">the complete story of Vladek Spiegelman and his wife, living and surviving in Hitler&#8217;s Europe. By addressing the horror of the Holocaust through cartoons, the author captures the everyday reality of fear and is able to explore the guilt, relief and extraordinary sensation of survival &#8211; and how the children of survivors are in their own way affected by the trials of their parents.
