Things are looking up. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40427 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Lenni-and-Margot_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Lenni-and-Margot_2.jpg 297w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Lenni-and-Margot_2-94x150.jpg 94w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Lenni-and-Margot_2-188x300.jpg 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the time of the Just Arrived post, I wrote:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>\u201c\u2026this book is a 2022 winner of the <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/yalsa\/alex-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Award<\/a>, given by YALSA (the Young Adult Library Services Association, I believe) in the USA, and has proven hugely popular internationally.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>From the synopsis, it\u2019s a heartwarming but (I strongly suspect) bittersweet, \u201cspring and winter\u201d story of Lenni, seventeen years old and hospitalized with cancer, and eighty-three-year-old Margot, who is a fellow patient in the same hospital. They strike up a friendship, and the titular one hundred years is the sum of their shared ages and life stories.\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>It\u2019s not a spoiler to say that one or both of them is going to die, because the backcover matter tells me that <\/em>\u201ctheir last\u2026[story]\u2026begins here.\u201d<em> So I suspect tears will be shed in the reading thereof. And have already resolved to have tissues on hand.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Well, I was not wrong about the tears and need for tissues\u2014but Lenni and Margot is neither lachrymose, nor saccharine. Nor is it a maudlin tale. It <em>is <\/em>heartwarming (like <em>The House in the Cerulean Sea<\/em>) and bittersweet, but also wry, humorous, and insouciant\u2014although not necessarily all at once.<\/p>\n<p>Despite some reservations re the potentially saccharine and\/or maudlin, I was swiftly drawn in and ended up being engaged by and involved in the intersecting lives of Lenni and Margot. I loved Lenni\u2019s \u201cvoice\u201d, in particular, but Margot was far from being an \u201calso-ran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So if you want a story about life and death and \u201call sorts and conditions\u201d of people, that will make you laugh and cry, and occasionally reach for those tissues, then <em>The One Hundred Years Of Lenni and Margot <\/em>could be the book for you.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40428\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Lenni-and-Margot_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Lenni-and-Margot_1.jpg 265w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Lenni-and-Margot_1-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Lenni-and-Margot_1-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you enjoyed <em>Me Before You<\/em> by Jojo Moyes, <em>The Fault in Our Stars<\/em> by John Green, or <em>Eleanor Oliphaunt is Completely Fine<\/em> by Gail Honeyman, then I believe the odds of your liking <em>The One Hundred Years Of Lenni and Margot <\/em>will shorten even further.<\/p>\n<p>Yep, you\u2019re right: I am recommending it.<\/p>\n<p>I read a trade edition, 392 pages, published by Doubleday.
