For example, I believe the heroic tradition is more pronounced in <em>The Heir of Night<\/em>, while &#8220;high romance&#8221; elements come through more in <em>The Gathering of the Lost<\/em> and <em>Daughter of Blood<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;high romance&#8221; stems from the chivalric epics of the High Medieval period, which are a major influence on epic fantasy: for example, the <i>Morte D&#8217;Arthur<\/i> and <i>Sir Gawain and The Green Knight<\/i>, as well as<i><b> <\/b><\/i><i>Le Roman de Perceval ou le Conte de Graal<\/i>, <i>Parsifal<b> <\/b><\/i>and<i><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><i>Lohengrin<b>. <\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40636\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40636\" class=\"wp-image-40636 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Arthur_Round-Table-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Arthur_Round-Table.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Arthur_Round-Table-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40636\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King Arthur and Guinevere (Excalibur)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Romance and love are an integral part of the High Fantasy tradition, but the High Romance lies in notions of quest and chivalry, of tryst and tokens, of the trumpet blast at dawn, the banners of noon day, and the twilight of the gods&#8211;and the romance is as often unrequited, star-crossed, or doomed, as ending &#8220;happily ever after.&#8221; This is the romance of Lancelot and Guinevere, Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady, of Tristan and Isolde&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-35952\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tristan-Isolde-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tristan-Isolde-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tristan-Isolde-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tristan-Isolde.jpg 353w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><br \/>\n<b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b> In short, the love of High Romantic Fantasy may be bitter-sweet, but no less poignant for all of that &#8212; as I believe Kalan and Jarna&#8217;s arc in <em>The Gathering of the Lost,<\/em> and Myr&#8217;s storyline in <em>Daughter of Blood<\/em>, attest.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10770\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10770\" class=\"wp-image-10770 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/GatheringoftheLost-covCD9D-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/GatheringoftheLost-covCD9D-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/GatheringoftheLost-covCD9D-150x108.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/GatheringoftheLost-covCD9D.jpg 933w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The trumpet blast at dawn&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 1 December, when Kim Falconer (currently writing as AK Wilder) and I joined forces to post the final instalment in the What Makes A Hero?
