I&#8217;ve already mentioned AK Wilder&#8217;s much-awaited <strong><em>Curse of Shadows<\/em> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2022\/12\/26\/look-whats-new-curse-of-shadows-from-ak-wilder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arriving immediately pre-Christmas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, here&#8217;s what Santa, along with various other friends and wellwishers, have brought&#8211;and bought!&#8212;me since:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Something Old:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><em>Dogside Story<\/em><\/strong> by Patricia Grace (first published 2001.) Those who visit here regularly probably already know I&#8217;m a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.read-nz.org\/writer\/grace-patricia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrica Grace<\/a> fan. Yes, right from here very first book, <strong><em>Mutuwhenua: The Moon Sleeps<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-40766\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dogside-Story-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dogside-Story-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dogside-Story-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dogside-Story.jpg 307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t read <em>Dogside Story<\/em>, though, and a friend in reading has been telling me it&#8217;s her favourite &#8212; so now I have my opportunity to find out for myself.<\/p>\n<h3>Something New:<\/h3>\n<p>OK, several somethings new, but first and foremost there&#8217;s <em><strong>Novelist As A Vocation<\/strong><\/em> (2022 in translation; 2015 in Japan) by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harukimurakami.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Haruki Murakami<\/a>, who is another author whose work and philosophy I heart greatly. So as you can probably imagine, I&#8217;ve already dipped into the series of collected essays that make up this work.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, so far it&#8217;s just as good as I expected it to be. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-40767\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/NovelistAs-A-Vocation_Haruki-Murakami-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/NovelistAs-A-Vocation_Haruki-Murakami-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/NovelistAs-A-Vocation_Haruki-Murakami-92x150.jpg 92w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/NovelistAs-A-Vocation_Haruki-Murakami-768x1257.jpg 768w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/NovelistAs-A-Vocation_Haruki-Murakami-626x1024.jpg 626w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/NovelistAs-A-Vocation_Haruki-Murakami.jpg 1587w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>King of Scars<\/em><\/strong> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leighbardugo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leigh Bardugo<\/a>, published in 2019, is considerably less new than <em>Novelist As A Vocation,\u00a0<\/em>but as fan of the Crows duology and Leigh Bradugo&#8217;s writing generally, I was pleased to find it in my Christmas stocking.
