I was going to have \u201cin Fantasy\u201d<\/em> in the title, except one of the most famous fictional catchcries is the legendary \u201cAll for one and one for all!\u201d<\/em> from Alexander Dumas\u2019 The Three Musketeers<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 which however fabulous, is not<\/em> fantasy.<\/p>\n

“The” 1973 film version<\/p><\/div>\n

Nonetheless, the genre has its share of slogans and catchcries. The one that sparked this post was \u201cIn the bright\u201d,<\/em> from Mary Victoria\u2019s Tymon\u2019s Flight<\/em><\/strong> trilogy. In the bright<\/em> is a greeting, one that makes a lot of sense given her world is a giant tree, with brightness being something those living within its canopy appreciate.<\/p>\n

I also love \u201cWatch for me!\u201d<\/em>, which is both a blessing and a curse in the Los Nefilim<\/strong> series by Teresa Frohock. To give you context, the nefilim are constantly reborn to serve in the way between angels and demons, so \u201cWatch for me\u201d may be something a nefilim says to friends \u2013 but also enemies.<\/p>\n

A similarly doubled-edged watchword is \u201cA Lannister always pays his debts\u201d<\/em> from George RR Martin\u2019s famous A Game of Thrones*<\/strong> series. For the Starks and their northern allies, of course, it\u2019s \u201cThe North remembers\u201d<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not precisely a slogan, but I\u2019ve always loved the way Anna Smaill uses musical terms in the language of her The Chimes<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 world. Presto<\/em>, meaning to act quickly (think pronto<\/em>), is one of the most common, which I always associate with the book.<\/p>\n

And while it may be less well-known (but undoubtedly deserves to be better known, imho), I have always enjoyed the \u201cAwesome: High five!\u201d<\/em> uttered at strategic moments by Tenzin, the Tibetan monk-mentor in The Prince of Soul and the Lighthouse<\/em><\/strong>, by Fredrik Broun\u00e9ous.<\/p>\n

I believe the closest to a catchphrase I can muster in The Wall of Night<\/strong> series is the Derai greeting and farewell, \u201cHonor on you and on your House, Light and safety on your road.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure I\u2019ve missed innumerable others, though, so if you have a favourite to share \u2013 well, that\u2019s what the Comments are for<\/em>, dear readers. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n
