(For example, this would rule out Mara in the Empire series, where motherhood is not really a significant part of her arc: imho.)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003366;\">\u2014 the character can appear in any form of SFF: from magic realism, through paranormal and steampunk to epic fantasy; from near future dystopia through space opera to hard Sci Fi. (See cover above.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20114\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/asongforarbonne-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/asongforarbonne-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/asongforarbonne-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/asongforarbonne.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Rosala de Garsenc <\/strong>and<strong> Signy de Barbentain<\/strong> in <a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"http:\/\/brightweavings.com\/ggk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Gavriel Kay\u2019s<\/a> <strong><em>A Song For Arbonne<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 both are prominent characters in the story.\u00a0 <strong>Signy<\/strong> is Countess of Arbonne and her relationship with her daughters, one living, one dead, plays an important part in shaping her character and role in the story. <strong>Rosala<\/strong> flees her husband and her country in the late stages of pregnancy because her father-in-law has threatened to take her baby and because she does not want her child raised to emulate his cruelty and megalomania.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33512\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Dragonsbane-Kindle-cvr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Dragonsbane-Kindle-cvr.jpg 200w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Dragonsbane-Kindle-cvr-111x150.jpg 111w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Jenny Waynest<\/strong> in <a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barbarahambly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barbara Hambly\u2019s<\/a> <strong><em>Dragonsbane<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 Jenny is a wizard and the main character in the book; she has two sons and although they don\u2019t play a large part in the story directly, part of what Jenny struggles with as a character is how to reconcile being a wizard as well as a mother.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17212\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/songs-of-the-earth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/songs-of-the-earth.jpg 196w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/songs-of-the-earth-98x150.jpg 98w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Teia<\/strong> in <a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"http:\/\/elspethcooper.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elspeth Cooper\u2019s <\/a><strong>The Wild Hunt<\/strong> quartet, is pregnant through much of the first two books and a new mother by the end of the third book (the fourth \u2014 not unlike mine &#x1f609; \u2014 is forthcoming), so motherhood is unarguably central to her arc and gives it additional interest, imo.
