As with <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2023\/01\/09\/book-booty-aka-what-the-holiday-season-brought-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last year<\/a>, I&#8217;m going to see if I can fit them under my <em>old-new-borrowed-blue<\/em> headings. Here goes!<\/p>\n<h3>Something Old(er):<\/h3>\n<p><strong><em>Night Train to Lisbon<\/em><\/strong> by Pascal Mercier (2004)<\/p>\n<p>Having heard this book mentioned favourably several times, I have finally &#8220;bitten the bullet&#8221; and gotten it onto m&#8217;2024 booty table. My only debate is whether to read the book or watch the movie first. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-41875\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Night-Train-To-Lisbon-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Night-Train-To-Lisbon-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Night-Train-To-Lisbon-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Night-Train-To-Lisbon.jpg 264w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>To Say Nothing Of the Dog<\/em><\/strong> by Connie Willis (1997)<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know, it&#8217;s classic speculative fiction (note the Masterworks tag on the cover) and I&#8217;m a speculative fiction author so I <em>should<\/em> have read it already&#8211;but I haven&#8217;t! <em>Doomsday Book<\/em>, yes; <em>Blackout<\/em> and <em>All Clear<\/em>, check: but not, alas, <em>To Say Nothing Of the Dog<\/em>. Canna wait! (And won&#8217;t have to once I collect it from the bookshop: it was preordered for me by a brother and sister-in-law, some time ago now, as a birthday gift.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-41878\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/System-Collapse_Martha-Wells-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/System-Collapse_Martha-Wells-188x300.jpg 188w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/System-Collapse_Martha-Wells-94x150.jpg 94w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/System-Collapse_Martha-Wells.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Notebook: A History of Thinking on Paper<\/strong><\/em> by Roland Allen (2023)<\/p>\n<p>I am definitely someone who &#8220;thinks on paper&#8221;, so how could I pass this book by? Rhetorical question: of course I couldn&#8217;t. It was a birthday gift for a family member , but they&#8217;ve galloped through it, with a good report, so I was quick to be next in line &#8212; which puts it in the &#8220;Borrowed&#8221; category as well as &#8220;Something New.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-41876\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Notebook_A-History-of-Thinking-On-Paper-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Notebook_A-History-of-Thinking-On-Paper-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Notebook_A-History-of-Thinking-On-Paper-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Notebook_A-History-of-Thinking-On-Paper.jpg 345w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Something Borrowed<\/h3>\n<p><strong><em>The Wren, The Wren<\/em><\/strong> by Annie Enright (2023)<\/p>\n<p>I borrowed this book from another sister-in-law (are you noticing the family connection here? \ud83d\ude09 ) after she finished it over the break. It will be my first Annie Enright novel so I&#8217;m looking forward to checking it out. It&#8217;s also new, you&#8217;ll note, having been published in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41877\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/The-Wren-The-Wren.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/The-Wren-The-Wren.jpg 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/The-Wren-The-Wren-100x150.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Something Blue<\/h3>\n<p><strong><em>Station Eternity<\/em><\/strong> by Mur Lafferty (2022)<\/p>\n<p>Well the cover is blue, anyway: very blue. \ud83d\ude42 Totally in a good way, since I love blue and love the cover. Given the <strong><em>Station Eternity<\/em><\/strong> series&#8217; title is &#8220;The Midsolar Murders&#8221;, I am suspecting this may be a cosy-murder-meets-space-opera mashup. Accordingly, I am expecting fun, so will let you know how that turns out. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-41896\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Station-Eternity-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Station-Eternity-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Station-Eternity-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Station-Eternity.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, there&#8217;s the cover of <em>Night Train To Lisbon<\/em>, which is also blue (the edition featured, at any rate.) I do feel, however, that it&#8217;s better placed where it is, in the Older reads category.<\/p>\n<p>I hope many, if not all, of you have some new titles on the go as well.
