The festival takes its name, Matariki, from when the Matariki star cluster (also known as the Pleiades) reappears in the winter sky.<\/p>\n<p>Matariki is a season of renewal, in which those who have passed on in the past year are remembered and ongoing life celebrated &#8212; but the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, goes into it more fully (and says it so much better \ud83d\ude00 ) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tepapa.govt.nz\/discover-collections\/read-watch-play\/matariki-maori-new-year\/what-and-who-matariki\/what-matariki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I recently rediscovered this quote from a poem by English poet Sarah Williams (1837 &#8211; 1868), <em>The Old Astronomer To His Pupil. <\/em>It feels very apt for Matariki:<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8220;<em><strong>Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light;<br \/>\nI have loved the stars too truly to be fearful of the night.<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You can read the full poem, <a href=\"https:\/\/studentnewspaper.org\/poem-of-the-week-sarah-williams-%E2%80%8Bthe-old-astronomer-to-his-pupil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And more on Sarah Williams, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sarah_Williams_(poet)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tomorrow is Matariki, which marks the traditional Maori new year, te M\u0101tahi o te Tau, here in New Zealand.
