I also believe books offer us doorways into disparate worlds: all we have to do is work through (yes, a little like Narnia and the wardrobe \ud83d\ude09 ) &#8212; and, of course, I write fantasy that features portals, gates, and other magical doorways.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2570\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/thornspellcover_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The quote also resonated in terms of my personal writing and storytelling journey, because I first listened to <em>Sleeping Beauty<\/em> (on the radio) as a very small child, then later read the fairy tale for myself, before &#8212; many years later &#8212; writing <em>Thornspell<\/em>, which is my own retelling of the tale.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Once upon a time is no particular time&#8230;&#8217;<\/em> I love it, not least because it puts me in mind of a quote from Ursula Le Guin&#8217;s Earthsea, where stories begin with the phrase: <em>&#8220;As far away as Selidor* and as long ago as forever&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32035\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Farthest-Shore-178x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Farthest-Shore-178x300.jpg 178w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Farthest-Shore-89x150.jpg 89w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Farthest-Shore.jpg 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/><\/p>\n<pre>* Selidor is the island where the great dragons may be found, \r\nin the archipelago known as the Dragon's Reach.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Once upon a time is no particular time, fictional time, fairy-story time.
