Herewith in alphabetical order by title:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>City of Girls<\/em><\/strong> by Elizabeth Gilbert (2019)<\/p>\n<p>Yes, <em>the<\/em> Elizabeth Gilbert of <em>Eat, Pray, Love<\/em> fame. This is a later work, which I would categorise as &#8220;recent historical&#8221; fiction, i.e. it starts in 1940 and covers a time period until 2010. From the backcover synopsis, it appears to be about a young woman, Vivian Morris, carving out a life for herself amid the New York showbiz scene and how that does&#8212;or doesn&#8217;t&#8212;work out for her.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-42422\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/City-of-Girls_2-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/City-of-Girls_2-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/City-of-Girls_2-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/City-of-Girls_2.jpg 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Educated<\/strong> <\/em>by Tara Westover (2018)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been meaning to read this book for some time. It&#8217;s a memoir about a young woman growing up in an &#8220;End of Days&#8221; family in the US and only gaining an education after she leaves home, at the age of sixteen. It was\/is an international bestseller and the seven lead-in pages of positive reviews reinforce that a lot of people really liked it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-42423\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Educated-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Educated-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Educated-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Educated.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Songbirds<\/strong><\/em> by Christy Lefteri (2021)<\/p>\n<p>Although a novel, I believe it is based upon true events that happened in Cyprus. This particular story is about the disappearance of a fictional woman, Nisha, and the people who try to find her.
