Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been talking poetry a bit more than usual lately (at least since the sad demise of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tuesdaypoem.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tuesday Poem<\/a> community), mainly sparked by the <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2024\/09\/19\/boosted-poetry-in-performance-fundraiser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boosted campaign for the Canterbury Poets<\/a>, so in that spirit, it feels like time for a poem.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42457\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/CPC-banner-300x125.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/CPC-banner-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/CPC-banner-150x63.png 150w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/CPC-banner-768x320.png 768w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/CPC-banner-1024x427.png 1024w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/CPC-banner.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Homing<\/em> is from the <strong>Ithaca Conversations<\/strong> series and (for those who don&#8217;t know the story) centers on Odysseus&#8217;s (aka Ulysses) return to his home island of Ithaca after twenty years&#8217; away: ten years fighting in the Trojan War (<em>The Illiad<\/em>) and ten years of storms, shipwreck, and sorcery (<em>The Odyssey<\/em>), attempting to return home.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Homing<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">He hears it, in every slap<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">of wave against wood,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">as the ship cleaves water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">like a seabird, hears the word<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">that he has hungered for<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">through the lost years,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">whispered to him now<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">by the sea as it bears him up,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">speeds him on like a lover<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">to the consummation<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">of his long-held dream<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">of home:\u00a0\u00a0<em>home<\/em>, lilts the sea,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">soft as a lullaby, and\u00a0<em>home<\/em>,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">sings the wind, slipping<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">through rigging, soothing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">him to rest, not to wake<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">even as a clear dawn<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">pares away night, reveals<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">rocky shores and a green crag<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">rising, not even to stir<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">when the sailors lift him<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">over the bulwark and down,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">splashing through shallows<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">to leave him on shadowed sand,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">tender as a child smiling<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">in his sleep, and dreaming,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">dreaming still<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">of the long returning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>(c) Helen Lowe<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Published in\u00a0<strong><em>JAAM 26\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>2008<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/jaam-26-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"232\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I observed in relation to another <strong>Ithaca Conversations <\/strong>poem, <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/10\/20\/the-tuesday-poem-argos-from-the-ithaca-conversations-sequence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Argos<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the sequence reflects my long held love of myth and legend. <strong><em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Iliad<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><em>The<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>Odyssey<\/em><\/strong> were among my earliest favourites, and the power they exerted over my imagination is best evidenced by the way they continue to infiltrate my poetry and short fiction.
