Time For A Listicle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you can probably tell by the late hour for this post, I&#8217;ve been running to stand still today &#8212; but it&#8217;s also Halloween, which seems the perfect time for some listicle fun. And what better theme than tales that bridge the human and supernatural realms, especially those with a little but of dark and spooky thrown in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8750\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Supelogo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Supelogo.jpg 196w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Supelogo-150x147.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Starting with the now-classic <strong><em>Faerie Tale<\/em><\/strong> by Raymond E Feist, the definitely eerie tale of power struggles in Faerie breaking through into the everyday world, with dangerous and often terrifying results.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18510\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Faerie-Tale-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Faerie-Tale-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Faerie-Tale-93x150.jpg 93w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Faerie-Tale.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the great Halloween legends is that of Tam Lin, a knight stolen away to Faerie who will be given as tribute to hell unless he can escape or be rescued. In order to attempt the rescue, his lover, Janet, must dare faerie ground at Halloween&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-42642\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Tam-Lin_Pamela-Dean-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Tam-Lin_Pamela-Dean-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Tam-Lin_Pamela-Dean-101x150.jpg 101w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Tam-Lin_Pamela-Dean.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pamela Dean&#8217;s <strong><em>Tam Lin<\/em> <\/strong>retells the legend, but it&#8217;s referenced in other works, including <strong><em>The House At The End of the Sea<\/em><\/strong> by Victoria M Adams &#8212; which also traverses the crossover between this world and faerie, to the detriment of those that cross or make bargains with the Fae.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-42260\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cover-the-house-at-the-end-of-the-sea-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cover-the-house-at-the-end-of-the-sea-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cover-the-house-at-the-end-of-the-sea-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cover-the-house-at-the-end-of-the-sea.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another famous novel in the same vein is Ellen Kushner&#8217;s retelling of <em>Thomas the Rhymer<\/em>, in which a minstrel is (again) stolen away into Faerie for seven years and returns blessed, or cursed, to speak only the truth&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-42644\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ThomastheRhymer_Kushner-1-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ThomastheRhymer_Kushner-1-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ThomastheRhymer_Kushner-1-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ThomastheRhymer_Kushner-1.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My own <strong><em>Thornspell<\/em><\/strong> is also set in the dangerous intersection of the faerie and human realms, a border the hero must traverse in order to undo the spell that has condemned a princess and entire castle to sleep for a hundred years &#8212; and in so doing thwart a wicked fae&#8217;s ongoing malevolence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4378\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Thornspell-cover-illustration-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Thornspell-cover-illustration-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Thornspell-cover-illustration-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Thornspell-cover-illustration-723x1024.jpg 723w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If a little more spooky is what you fancy for your Halloween reading, then it&#8217;s hard to go past Margaret Mahy&#8217;s <strong><em>The Changeover<\/em><\/strong>, which is a tale of supernatural possession.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-34267\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/The-Changeover-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/The-Changeover-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/The-Changeover-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/The-Changeover.jpg 305w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And TL Huchu has deployed the ghostly and other supernatural elements, chiefly but not exclusively Scottish, to great effect in his <strong>Edinburgh Dead<\/strong> series.
