Or more correctly, aren\u2019t the tree roots pictured in the photo marvelous? (I am more than prepared to admit that my photography is definitely at the \u2018fun snap\u2019 end of the spectrum.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The roots belong to the Moreton Bay fig I featured yesterday, which resides in Auckland\u2019s Cornwall Park. I have always loved the species\u2019 snaking, twisty roots \u2014 and as a Fantasy reader as well as a writer, they always make me think Entish thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Ents, of course, are probably the most famous \u201ctrees\u201d, or in their case, treelike beings, in Fantasy literature. They feature in the second and third books of <strong><em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em><\/strong> trilogy and played a major part in <strong>The Two Towers<\/strong> film, with the <a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/07\/10\/six-great-heroes-of-epic-fantasy-part-2\/the_two_towers_tolkien\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6682\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6682\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/The_Two_Towers_Tolkien.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 123px) 100vw, 123px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/The_Two_Towers_Tolkien.jpg 170w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/The_Two_Towers_Tolkien-92x150.jpg 92w\" alt=\"The_Two_Towers_(Tolkien)\" width=\"123\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>attack on, and destruction of Isengard:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>\u201cPippin looked behind. The number of Ents had grown \u2014 or what was happening? Where the dim bare slopes that they had crossed should lie, he thought he saw groves of trees. But they were moving! Could it be that the trees of Fangorn were awake, and the forest was rising, marching over the hills to war? He rubbed his eyes wondering if sleep and shadow had deceived him; but the great grey shapes moved steadily onward.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2016\/07\/31\/trees-in-fantasy-fiction\/prince-caspian\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32888\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-32888\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Prince-Caspian.gif\" alt=\"Prince Caspian\" width=\"133\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a>Sentient trees also feature in CS Lewis\u2019s <strong>Narnia<\/strong> series and I\u2019ve always loved the scene in <em>Prince Caspian<\/em> where Aslan reawakens the trees that have slept as a result of the Telmarine invasion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>\u201cWhat Lucy and Susan saw was a dark something coming to them from almost every direction across the hills. It looked first like a black mist creeping on the ground, then like the stormy waves of a black sea rising higher and higher as it came on, and then, at last, like what it was \u2014 woods on the move. All the trees of the world appeared to be rushing towards Aslan.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/04\/14\/sir-julius-vogel-awards-2011-the-heir-of-night-a-finalist\/tymonsflight-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4838\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4838\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/tymonsflight-183x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/tymonsflight-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/tymonsflight-91x150.jpg 91w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/tymonsflight-627x1024.jpg 627w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/tymonsflight.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"tymonsflight\" width=\"136\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a>Sometimes, however, it is not a forest but a single tree that features \u2014 like the world tree in <a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"http:\/\/maryvictoria.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Victoria\u2019s<\/a> <strong>Chronicles of the Tree<\/strong> series, which is first encountered in <em>Tymon\u2019s Flight<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>\u201cTo starboard of the vessel\u2026stretched a vast and furrowed mountain of bark, so wide that it\u2019s curvature was almost invisible and so high that both its summit and its base were lost to view. The immensity of the wall was broken by a profusion of spoke-like limbs, the largest many miles in length. Several hundred feet above the dirigible the trunk culminated in the gently rising plateau of branches and twigs that made up the Central Canopy\u2019s crown.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2015\/02\/12\/sff-cover-art-love-more-favorites\/the-summer-tree_fionavar-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28124\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-28124\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Summer-Tree_Fionavar-1-183x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Summer-Tree_Fionavar-1-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Summer-Tree_Fionavar-1-91x150.jpg 91w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Summer-Tree_Fionavar-1.jpg 288w\" alt=\"The Summer Tree_Fionavar 1\" width=\"135\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a>Guy Gavriel Kay\u2019s Summer Tree, from the book of the same name, may not be a world in size, but it is still intriguing, magical, and powerful:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>\u201c\u2026and he came into the place wherein stood the Summer Tree. Very great it was, dark almost to black, its trunk knotted and gnarled, wide as a house. It stood alone in the clearing, in the place of sacrifice, and clutched the earth with roots old as the world, a challenge to the stars that shone down, and there was power in that place beyond the telling.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/07\/08\/six-great-heroes-of-epic-fantasy-part-1\/riddlemaster_of_hed_3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6592\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6592\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/riddlemaster_of_hed_3-195x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 134px) 100vw, 134px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/riddlemaster_of_hed_3-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/riddlemaster_of_hed_3-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/riddlemaster_of_hed_3.jpg 309w\" alt=\"riddlemaster_of_hed_3\" width=\"134\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a>Werewolves and other were-beasts have become very popular in recent years, but Fantasy contains at least one instance of tree-shifting: Danan Isig in Patricia McKillip\u2019s <em>The Riddlemaster of Hed<\/em>, who teaches the skill to the protagonist, Morgon:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>\u201cWas I a tree? Sometimes I stand so long in the snow watching the trees wrapped in their private thoughts that I forget myself, become one of them. They are as old as I am, as old as Isig. . .\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/07\/10\/six-great-heroes-of-epic-fantasy-part-2\/gameofthronesp-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6719\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6719 \" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/gameofthronesp.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 118px) 100vw, 118px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/gameofthronesp.jpg 142w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/gameofthronesp-88x150.jpg 88w\" alt=\"One of those favourite covers\" width=\"118\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\">When discussing trees in Fantasy I don\u2019t think I could go past the weirwood that stands at the heart of Winterfell, in George RR Martin\u2019s <em>A Game Of Thrones<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>\u201cAt the center of the grove an ancient weirwood brooded over a small pool where the waters were black and cold. \u201cThe heart tree,\u201d Ned called it. The weirwood\u2019s bark was white as bone, its leaves dark red, like a thousand bloodstained hands.
