It was published in <strong><em>moments in the whirlwind<\/em><\/strong>, the NZ Poetry Anthology in 2009.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The Begonias<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Mal pushes<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">each seedling down,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">grime lining<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">the cracks in her hands,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">eyes narrowed<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">against the sun\u2019s<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">low angle.\u00a0 Usually<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">she crams her hair up<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">beneath an old hat\u2014the floppy kind<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">that cricketers wear\u2014<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">but today the hat is perched<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">amongst <em>magnolia stellata<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">and Mal\u2019s hair<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">is a fraying rope<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">that follows the curve<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">of her spine, swinging<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">to every movement<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">of bend forward, sit back,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">as she pauses, wiping<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">dirt across her face.\u00a0 \u201cI thought<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">you didn\u2019t like begonias,\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">I say.\u00a0 Mal shrugs.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u201cMum always planted them here.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">I thought I might as well \u2026\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">She seizes the hat,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">pulls it low<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">across her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">(c) Helen Lowe<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the spirit of last Thursday&#8217;s post on repaying my arrears to the garden (a repayment that has continued apace \ud83d\ude00 ), I thought it was time to revisit The Begonias, previously featured here as a Tuesday Poem.
