One way to gain that distance is by laying the manuscript aside for a time, whether hours, days, or even months (or years &#8212; like Tolkien leaving <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> at Balin&#8217;s Tomb until after World War 2 ended), before revisiting it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36556\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36556\" class=\"wp-image-36556 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Fellowship-Of-The-Ring-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Fellowship-Of-The-Ring-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Fellowship-Of-The-Ring-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Fellowship-Of-The-Ring.jpg 317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-36556\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A ca. 5-year hiatus<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In my experience, though, the most surefire way to detect whether my writing is on point, is to read the material aloud. Reading aloud quickly highlights any infelicities around narrative flow, unrealistic dialogue, and unnecessary exposition. So if in any doubt at all, I always read any tricky passages aloud. It&#8217;s contemporary realism set in small-town Australia.
