{"id":5551,"date":"2011-05-23T10:30:03","date_gmt":"2011-05-22T22:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=5551"},"modified":"2011-05-23T11:20:50","modified_gmt":"2011-05-22T23:20:50","slug":"what-im-reading-broadsheet-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/05\/23\/what-im-reading-broadsheet-7\/","title":{"rendered":"What I&#8217;m Reading: &#8220;broadsheet 7&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/05\/08\/just-arrived-broadsheet-7-new-new-zealand-poetry\/\">Recently I mentioned<\/a> that I had received my contributor&#8217;s copies of <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/broadsheetnz.wordpress.com\/current-issue\/\">broadsheet 7: new new zealand poetry<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>(The Night Press) edited by Mark Pirie. <em><strong>broadsheet <\/strong><\/em>is\u00a0 a\u00a0 by-invitation publication and\u00a0 I was pleased to be able to contribute <em><strong>Starman<\/strong><\/em> and also <em><strong>Penelope Dreaming<\/strong><\/em> from the <em>Ithaca Conversations<\/em> sequence. Since receiving <em><strong>broadsheet<\/strong><\/em>, I have also been enjoying the process of working through the journal, savouring the work of my fellow poets. Because I like to take poetry slowly, rather than galloping through, I haven&#8217;t finished yet. And because I always work through from beginning to tend, I haven&#8217;t yet reached the featured guest, <strong>Anthony Rudolf<\/strong> of the UK, or the other poets in the latter part of the journal.<\/p>\n<p>So, like Arnie in Terminator 2, I&#8217;ll be back &#8230; But for now I can say that I am very much enjoying <em><strong>broadsheet 7<\/strong><\/em> and there are both poems and lines within them that delight, from <strong>Emma Barnes<\/strong>&#8216; opening poem, <strong><em>Sacral:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8221; &#8230; I play quartet notes. I play<br \/>\ncrotchets. The string wound<br \/>\naround me bodily. I am tied<br \/>\nin the bowing of a cello<br \/>\nin the crowing of a crowd.<br \/>\nThe crowning of your head<br \/>\nThe cawing of you crawling.<br \/>\nYou open your eyes and say:<br \/>\n&#8220;What magic is this?&#8221; &#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>to the magic realism of <strong>Basim Furat&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong><em>Students of Hondori <\/em><\/strong>(translated by Abdul Monem Nasser; edited by Mark Pirie):<\/p>\n<p>\u201c \u2026The cries of sellers there<br \/>\nawaken in me an adoration for an ancient land<br \/>\nwhere jewels are words, river water is sold in jars<br \/>\nand sea scent covers the stalls \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>and <strong>Sarahda Koirala&#8217;s<\/strong> delicate irony in <em><strong>Portrait<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c \u2026 But after the photo you took a day off<br \/>\nbrightening the shadow on my face<br \/>\ncast by the open window<br \/>\nand air-brushing the hair from my eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are just a small sample of the many fine poems on offer, but I hope they tempt you to dip into <a href=\"http:\/\/broadsheetnz.wordpress.com\/\"><em><strong>broadsheet 7<\/strong><\/em><\/a> for yourself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I mentioned that I had received my contributor&#8217;s copies of broadsheet 7: new new zealand poetry (The Night Press) edited by Mark Pirie. broadsheet is\u00a0 a\u00a0 by-invitation publication and\u00a0 I was pleased to be able to contribute Starman and also Penelope Dreaming from the Ithaca Conversations sequence.
