{"id":5811,"date":"2011-05-31T07:30:22","date_gmt":"2011-05-30T19:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=5811"},"modified":"2011-05-31T08:39:58","modified_gmt":"2011-05-30T20:39:58","slug":"happy-birthday-to-on-anything-really-1-year-old-today-plus-grand-birthday-giveaway-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/05\/31\/happy-birthday-to-on-anything-really-1-year-old-today-plus-grand-birthday-giveaway-begins\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday to &#8221; &#8230; on Anything, Really&#8221;: 1 Year Old Today&#8212;Plus Grand Birthday Giveaway Begins!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we did it.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly 1 year ago today I put up my very first post here\u00a0 <em><strong>&#8221; &#8230; on Anything, Really&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>, titled (appropriately enough, but possibly not very originally) <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/05\/31\/and-so-it-begins\/\">&#8220;And so it begins &#8230;&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What I said on May 31 2010 was:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8221; &#8230; in terms of content I\u2019ll be focusing on my writing, so expect to see plenty here about both novels and poetry, what\u2019s coming up and what\u2019s happening, as well as the interviews I do on radio\u2014and I hope there\u2019ll be a few online interviews showing up here! <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But it won\u2019t just be my creative work: I\u2019m looking forward to having conversations around what I\u2019m reading now, the books I\u2019ve loved reading in the past as well as creative influences from other areas.\u00a0 I also love food and wine, trees, getting out into wild places . . . as well as having a little cat buddy who likes to have his share in the conversations. So hope to keep that promise of \u201canything really \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, I think I&#8217;ve done all that and a little bit more, including <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/category\/earthquakereports\/\">reporting<\/a> from the suburban front lines of <strong>Christchurch&#8217;s February 22nd earthquake<\/strong> and its aftermath. In the past year I have also held not one but <em>three<\/em> blog parties to celebrate the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/here-at-last-publication-date-in-the-usa\/\">US<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/10\/07\/the-heir-of-night-launched-in-australianew-zealand-today-im-celebratin\/\">Australia\/New Zealand<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/03\/03\/the-heir-of-night-now-published-in-the-uk-plus-earthquake-launch-a-thon\/\">UK<\/a><\/strong> launches of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helenlowe.info\/wallofnight.html\"><em><strong>The Heir of Night<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and also run a <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/category\/fsf-guest-author-series\/\"><strong>F-SF Guest Author Series<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blogging Every Day &#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em>When I began blogging, I also decided to try and blog every day if I could. In total, I have clocked up <strong>406 posts<\/strong>, but I did miss one day: Febuary 23, the day immediately following the February 22nd Christchurch earthquake when the sector of the city I live in was still without power&#8212;and a great many other services, but power was the one that prevented blogging. I do feel, though, that this circumstance counts as an extenuating circumstance in terms of my objective to\u00a0 &#8216;blog every day.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Few Statistics:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In terms of site visitors, my first month was the lowest for distinct visitors: 1476<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The highest month to date: 5000 distinct visits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And readership has grown by approximately 50% this year from the end of 2010.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, very modest compared to the followings enjoyed by Messrs Gaiman and Scalzi and also sites such as Beatties Bookblog, but hey&#8212; <strong><em>&#8220;&#8230; on Anything, Really&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> <em>is<\/em> still new.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Else Has Happened:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An important reason for commencing blogging here on <em>&#8220;&#8230;Anything, Really&#8221;<\/em> was as a means of communicating more directly with my readers, many of whom are international. So I blog because I&#8217;m a writer and the core of the blog is around my writing. So what&#8217;s been happening with that while I&#8217;ve been blogging every day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thornspell.info\/\"><strong><em>Thornspell<\/em><\/strong><\/a> came out in <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/06\/09\/thornspell-here-in-paperback-july-2\/\">paperback<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.helenlowe.info\/wallofnight.html\"><em><strong>The Heir of Night<\/strong><\/em><\/a> was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/here-at-last-publication-date-in-the-usa\/\">USA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/10\/07\/the-heir-of-night-launched-in-australianew-zealand-today-im-celebratin\/\">Australia-New Zealand<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/03\/03\/the-heir-of-night-now-published-in-the-uk-plus-earthquake-launch-a-thon\/\">UK<\/a>,\u00a0 with foreign rights sales into <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/12\/05\/more-good-news\/\">The Netherlands<\/a> and <strong>France<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>I completed the first draft of <em><strong>The Gathering of the Lost<\/strong><\/em>, <strong>The Wall of Night Series Book Two<\/strong> to my publishers and am currently completing the final version (a process that was somewhat delayed by earthquake and aftermath, but that, as they say, is life);<\/li>\n<li>I have had poetry published in the following journals: <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/11\/24\/new-publications-jaam-28-dance-dance-dance-and-bravado-20\/\"><em>Bravado;<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/11\/24\/new-publications-jaam-28-dance-dance-dance-and-bravado-20\/\"><em>JAAM<\/em><\/a>; the NZ Poetry SocietyAnthology 2010, <em>across the fingerboards;<\/em> the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/02\/12\/international-literary-quarterly-issue-14-published\/\">International Literary Quarterly<\/a> <\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/05\/08\/just-arrived-broadsheet-7-new-new-zealand-poetry\/\"><em>broadsheet 7: new, new zealand poetry<\/em><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>And through the blog I have become part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/tuesdaypoem.blogspot.com\/\"><strong>Tuesday Poem<\/strong><\/a> community;<\/li>\n<li>I completed a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/category\/interviews\/\">blog and radio interviews<\/a> with other writers; and<\/li>\n<li>Contributed a short story, <em><strong>The Fountain<\/strong><\/em>, to the recently published <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/05\/21\/the-excitement-mounts-tales-for-canterbury-goes-to-press\/\"><strong>Tales for Canterbury<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>anthology, a fundraising project for the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>AND<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>B <\/strong>is for<strong> Blogs, Birthdays and Birthday Present<\/strong>s:<\/p>\n<p>I decided that I wasn&#8217;t going to stick to the virtual for <strong><em>&#8220;&#8230; on Anything, Really&#8217;s&#8221; <\/em><\/strong>birthday.
