{"id":6449,"date":"2011-06-28T06:30:28","date_gmt":"2011-06-27T18:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=6449"},"modified":"2011-08-05T08:33:01","modified_gmt":"2011-08-04T20:33:01","slug":"tuesday-poem-allow-me-to-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/06\/28\/tuesday-poem-allow-me-to-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Poem: \u201cAllow Me To Say \u2026\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Allow me to say \u2026<\/h3>\n<p>Allow me to say<br \/>\nthat in the midst<br \/>\nof earthshaking, plus<br \/>\nassociated mud<br \/>\nand dust both inside<br \/>\nand out, as well<br \/>\nas queueing<br \/>\nfor the portaloo \u2014<br \/>\nI would like the lid<br \/>\nto stay on my electric<br \/>\nkettle so that boiling<br \/>\nwater to safe drinking<br \/>\nlevel becomes less<br \/>\nof an exercise<br \/>\nin burned fingertips<br \/>\nand frustration \u2026<\/p>\n<p>This kettle, I feel,<br \/>\nis no good: one day<br \/>\nwhen the world<br \/>\nbecomes safer,<br \/>\nI shall buy myself<br \/>\na better kettle.<\/p>\n<p>For now though,<br \/>\nI am grateful:<br \/>\nthe god of small things<br \/>\nis reminding me<br \/>\nthat I am alive.<br \/>\n.<br \/>\n\u00a9 Helen Lowe, 2011<br \/>\n.<br \/>\nNote: I wish to acknowledge the allusion to Anna Livesey\u2019s poem, <em>&#8220;Next Time&#8221;<\/em> (<em><strong>the moonmen<\/strong><\/em>, Victoria University Press, 2010) in stanza 2.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/06\/14\/tuesday-poem-a-canterbury-tale\/\">June 14<\/a>, I talked about my wariness of the &#8220;diary entry&#8221; poem in the context of the Canterbury earthquake&#8212;and in fact any of the major &#8220;situations&#8221; we all face at some time or other in our lives, whether natural or human-made disasters, or the loss of those we are close, too. Those remarks still hold &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Yet sometimes there is a place for the diary-entry poem and this is unashamedly one of those days and those poems&#8212;although I hope you will agree that the leaven of humour lifts <em>&#8220;Allow me to say &#8230;&#8221;<\/em> above the straightout &#8216;diary entry.&#8217; I have, however, listed it under &#8220;Earthquake Reports&#8221; as well as &#8220;Poetry&#8221;, because in its own way, I feel that it is a report from the &#8220;suburban rear lines.&#8221; \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy!
