I also liked the cultural perspective Mary drew on for the story, just a little outside the mainstream of western SFF:<\/p>\n<h2>The Daughter of the Khan<\/h2>\n<h3>by Mary Victoria<\/h3>\n<p><em>Habiba did not wish to be married.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Her prospective mother-in-law had paid a visit to the Ordubad house<br \/>\nthe month before, accompanied by the groom\u2019s aunt, both thin, severelooking<br \/>\nwomen with large noses. Habiba had been so dismayed by the<br \/>\naunt in particular that she had found herself incapable of retaining the<br \/>\nwoman\u2019s name. Darya? Dilya? She had asked her own mother three times<br \/>\nto remind her of it. Her giddiness had been interpreted by the family as a<br \/>\nbride\u2019s typical excitement, but in private, her mother had warned her to<br \/>\nbe more circumspect.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBibi, my heart,\u201d she said to Habiba, heaving a sigh, on the third<br \/>\noccasion the aunt\u2019s name was requested, \u201cmake an effort. If you don\u2019t<br \/>\nget on with your in-laws, you\u2019ll find marriage a chore.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Habiba balked at the idea of matrimony altogether, with or without<br \/>\na forbidding aunt. But that state of bliss, it seemed, had no regard for<br \/>\nher preferences. Her future father-in-law\u2019s visit had succeeded that of the<br \/>\ngroom\u2019s female relatives; dowry negotiations had begun then, in earnest,<br \/>\non the men\u2019s side of the house. Habiba\u2019s only part in that process had been<br \/>\nto maintain a decorous and obedient silence when her own father asked<br \/>\nfor her consent. Then the matchmakers had come, and the betrothal<br \/>\nhad been symbolically rejected and symbolically renewed, signifying how<br \/>\ndifficult it was for her parents to let her go.
