{"id":7275,"date":"2011-08-09T06:30:42","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T18:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=7275"},"modified":"2011-08-08T22:07:51","modified_gmt":"2011-08-08T10:07:51","slug":"tuesday-poem-june-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/08\/09\/tuesday-poem-june-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Poem: &#8220;June 13&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>June 13<\/h3>\n<p>This time,<br \/>\nI am not catapulted into heroic mould,<br \/>\nmy mind clear as I run through<br \/>\nand then execute whatever task<br \/>\nneeds to be done next \u2014<br \/>\nmerely noting the geyser<br \/>\nthat erupts on the fenceline,<br \/>\nliquefaction flowing in its wake,<br \/>\nand nod, detached, when the flood peaks<br \/>\njust centimetres below our floorline,<br \/>\nmud and water ponding<br \/>\nalong two sides of the house.<\/p>\n<p>But this time, there is no calm.<br \/>\nMy hands shake<br \/>\nas I work my way down<br \/>\nan identical checklist, fumbling<br \/>\nthe first few attempts<br \/>\nat every undertaking while outside<br \/>\nthe same grey slick<br \/>\noverruns the property again.<br \/>\nNot so badly as in February, perhaps,<br \/>\nbut I still turn away from neighbours,<br \/>\ngathering on the street, from<br \/>\ntheir variations on the theme<br \/>\nof <em>&#8220;it&#8217;s happened again&#8221;<\/em>\u2014the mix<br \/>\nof bewilderment and attempts at humour<br \/>\nto paper over the cracks, the hollow,<br \/>\nfalling-away sensation in the gut<br \/>\nbecause it <em>has<\/em> happened again.<\/p>\n<p>This time, my hands stay shaking,<br \/>\nyet all I feel is numb.<br \/>\n.<br \/>\n\u00a9 Helen Lowe, 2011<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>The first poem in what has turned into an Earthquake Poem sequence, titled <em>A Canterbury Tale<\/em>,\u00a0 was actually written on June 13, between the 5.7 and 6.3 earthquakes that happened within an hour of each other.
