{"id":8156,"date":"2011-09-16T06:30:27","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T18:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=8156"},"modified":"2011-09-22T23:33:53","modified_gmt":"2011-09-22T11:33:53","slug":"reflections-on-what-im-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/09\/16\/reflections-on-what-im-reading\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on What I&#8217;m Reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, when you&#8217;re reading, particular lines leap out at you.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because of the year we&#8217;ve been having here in Christchurch, with the earthquakes (you can read some of my reports <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/category\/earthquakereports\/\">here<\/a> and poems <a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/category\/earthquakepoems\/\">here<\/a>); or reflecting on the 10th anniversary of the collapse of the Twin Towers in New York on September 10, 2001, and the legacy of that event a decade later; or just taking two seconds to consider the world around me (famine again in the horn of Africa, kidnappings and murder in Kenya, oil still not contained in the Gulf of Mexico, the spectre of global financial crisis) the following lines have all resonated for me in recent reading:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5772\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/05\/29\/just-arrived-two-poetry-collections-a-novel\/my-iron-spine\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5772 alignright\" title=\"my-iron-spine\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/my-iron-spine-101x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"101\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/my-iron-spine-101x150.jpg 101w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/my-iron-spine.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px\" \/><\/a>From <a href=\"http:\/\/wingedink.blogspot.com\/\">Helen Rickerby&#8217;s<\/a> poem <strong><em>Vital Melancholy<\/em><\/strong> in her collection <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>My Iron Spine<\/strong><\/span> (Headworx, 2008):<\/p>\n<p><em>Two nights ago<br \/>\ndriving the storm road<br \/>\nbeside the lake<br \/>\nI realised I was afraid<br \/>\nNow knowing that the world<br \/>\nis frightening<br \/>\nfor children because<br \/>\nthey don\u2019t understand it<br \/>\nand frightening for grown-ups<br \/>\nbecause they do<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-8168\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/09\/16\/reflections-on-what-im-reading\/fried-green-tomatoes\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8168\" title=\"Fried Green Tomatoes\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Fried-Green-Tomatoes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a>I also read Fannie Flagg&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Cafe<\/strong><\/span> recently (saw the movie years ago, but only just read&#8212;and also enjoyed&#8212;the book!) and was struck by the following lines:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8221; &#8230; He had seen a lot happen at the mission &#8230; seen [men] &#8230; down on their luck &#8230; He had seen men come through that had been rich doctors and lawyers, and one man who had been a state senator &#8230; Smokey asked Jimmy what caused men like that to sink so low. &#8220;I&#8217;d have to say the main reason is that most of them have been disappointed in some way,&#8221; Jimmy said, &#8220;&#8230; and so they get lost and wander around. And, of course, old man whisky plays a role. But in all the years I&#8217;ve seen men come in and out, I&#8217;d say disappointment is number one on the list.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This quote from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Fried Green Tomatoes<\/strong><\/span> reminded me of poet and doctor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookcouncil.org.nz\/writers\/colquhoun.html\">Glenn Colquhoun&#8217;s<\/a> speech on <strong>&#8220;The Therapeutic Uses of Ache&#8221;<\/strong> to the Royal College of General Practitioners in Wellington in 2009, where he observed:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In fact, apart from a few of the old favourites, I don\u2019t often see much of what I learnt about in medical school at all &#8230; Of all the conditions I do see that no one ever taught me about, ache is  by far and away the most common. Too often in my practice it has forced  me to leave the tar-seal of the textbook. At those times I have  returned to what I have learnt from life by living it, mainly from  making a hash of it. It is the most reliable source of ache I know &#8230; Over time our sorrows accumulate. Ache becomes part of our shape \u2013 a  weird anatomy. It can be felt, seen, perceived and mapped by those who  know its language.<\/em><em>&#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-8459\" href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2011\/09\/16\/reflections-on-what-im-reading\/playing-god-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8459\" title=\"Playing God\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Playing-God1-111x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"111\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Playing-God1-111x150.jpg 111w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Playing-God1.jpg 118w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 111px) 100vw, 111px\" \/><\/a>To read the full address, click <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/books.scoop.co.nz\/2009\/11\/12\/the-therapeutic-uses-of-ache\/\">here<\/a>:<\/strong> it&#8217;s well worth it and also reminded me all over again what an acute observer Glenn Colquhoun is and how I need to read his collection <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Playing God<\/strong><\/span> again, and maybe even share some of the poems with you of a Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For me, writing is primarily to tell the stories that are &#8220;out there&#8221; in the realm of imagination, wanting and waiting to be told in the world. But within and through that come other things: to illuminate the human condition, to explore truths, to understand why we are and how &#8230; Literature, whether engaged in as writer or reader, is about connection, the realisation that we are part of a greater whole; and also reflection&#8212;holding up a mirror to ourselves, which very often shows us Glenn Colquhoun&#8217;s &#8220;ache.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And to finish, a quote that has long been a favourite of mine, from that very prolific writer, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augustine_of_Hippo\">Aurelius Augustine<\/a>, aka St Augustine of Hippo:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Bad times, hard times, this is what people keep saying; but &#8230; we are the times: Such as we are, such  are the times.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, when you&#8217;re reading, particular lines leap out at you.
