{"id":965,"date":"2010-08-13T13:32:40","date_gmt":"2010-08-13T01:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/?p=965"},"modified":"2010-08-13T13:32:40","modified_gmt":"2010-08-13T01:32:40","slug":"sir-julius-vogel-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/2010\/08\/13\/sir-julius-vogel-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Julius Vogel Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/sffanz.sf.org.nz\/sjv\/sjvAwards.shtml\"><strong>Sir Julius Vogel Awards<\/strong><\/a> are awarded annually by the <a href=\"http:\/\/sffanz.sf.org.nz\/about.shtml\"><strong>Science Fiction &amp; Fantasy Association of New Zealand<\/strong><\/a> (SFFANZ) and members of the <strong>National Science Fiction Convention<\/strong>&#8212;which this year is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aucontraire.org.nz\/\"><strong>Au Contraire<\/strong><\/a>, to be held in Wellington over the weekend of 27-29 August (i.e. not many sleeps now.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_967\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/SirJVA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-967\" class=\"size-full wp-image-967 \" title=\"SirJVA\" src=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/SirJVA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/SirJVA.jpg 216w, https:\/\/helenlowe.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/SirJVA-162x300.jpg 162w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sir Julius Vogel Award Trophy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Sir Julius Vogel Awards are given &#8220;to recognise excellence in science fiction and fantasy by New Zealanders and New Zealand residents&#8221; and include both professional and fan categories. Recipients of the awards receive a trophy with their name, the year and the award type, designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wetanz.com\/weta-workshop-services\/\"><strong>Weta Workshop<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s list includes an impressive range of known authors in the professional categories, such as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.julietmarillier.com\/\">Juliet Marillier<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/nalinisingh.blogspot.com\/\">Nalini Singh<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.russellkirkpatrick.com\/\"><strong>Russell Kirkpatrick<\/strong><\/a>, for <strong>Best Novel: Adult<\/strong>, as well as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.longacre.co.nz\/authors\/ellawest.html\">Ella West<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandyhager.com\/\">Mandy Hager<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianfalkner.co.nz\/\">Brian Falkner<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookcouncil.org.nz\/writers\/norcliffe.html\"><strong>James Norcliffe<\/strong><\/a> for <strong>Best Novel: Young Adult<\/strong>. (And, of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thornspell.info\/\"><strong><em>Thornspell<\/em><\/strong><\/a> won this award <a href=\"http:\/\/sffanz.sf.org.nz\/sjv\/sjvResults-2009.shtml\">last year<\/a>. \ud83d\ude42 )<\/p>\n<p>But there are also a range of newer names, particularly in the short fiction and novella categories, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ripleypatton.com\/\"><strong>Ripley  Patton<\/strong><\/a>, whom I recently interviewed for <strong>Women on Air, Plains 96.9 FM<\/strong>&#8212;I posted a link to the podcast <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/plainsfm.org.nz\/on-demand\/woa-ripleypatton-7august2010\">here<\/a> <\/strong>yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>And let&#8217;s not forget <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipoz.biz\/Titles\/Voy.htm\"><em><strong>Voyagers Science Fiction Poetry of New Zealand<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, which I have already mentioned a couple of times on this blog, which is up for <strong>Best Collected Work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the full list of finalists for yourself <a href=\"http:\/\/sffanz.sf.org.nz\/sjv\/sjvNominations-2010.shtml\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although final voting closes at the convention for attending members, the closing date for those not attending is <strong>20 August<\/strong>&#8212;so if you are keen to support a particular author or work, you need to think about voting now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sir Julius Vogel Awards are awarded annually by the Science Fiction &amp; Fantasy Association of New Zealand (SFFANZ) and members of the National Science Fiction Convention&#8212;which this year is Au Contraire, to be held in Wellington over the weekend of 27-29 August (i.e. not many sleeps now.)
