Christchurch Friends of the Library Event, Tuesday 14 June: Cancelled Due to Earthquake
Given today’s 5.5 and 6.0 earthquakes the Friends of the Library event scheduled for 12.30 pm tomorrow at Christchurch’s South Library has been cancelled.
Although disappointing, I completely understand that the library needs to be inspected before it can reopen—and I suspect that many potential attendees will have other things on their mind, dealing with the aftermath of the earthquakes!
I hope that you and your family are safe in light of the most recent quake. We’re only just getting word of it here.
ArcheeS, we are all safe and as well as can be expected, but there has been damage to infrastructure again, more collapsed buildings and more of the dreaded and dreadful liquefaction. Hard yards, I’m afraid.
Completely understandable cancellation. Hopefully the building is ok and not too many more will be deemed unsuitable.
Fingers crossed … One wonders just how many buildings a city can lose, how long one can go on knowing that it may happen again and even be worse in terms of damage.
Its true. After a point you really do.
We have a city here that was recently struck by a major tornado. Huge parts of the town were destroyed. There is even a picture of a metal chair embedded sideways in a concrete wall. I recently have to drive past it on the highway to get someplace and its a war zone but people are banding together and working to clean it up. All the time knowing that it can happen again next year. I know there is a natural disaster of some sort possible anywhere but its hard to think of living though it and rebuilding. I really think that both here and where you are, all the people getting out there and helping wherever they can are awesome.
You are talking about Joplin, I think? Like the Japanese tsunami the sheer magnitude of the tornado damage makes the mind boggle. And I know that ‘cyclone cellars’ are a feature of everyday life in many parts of the States. The spirit of community has definitely been one of the few upsides of the Christchurch situation, but there will still be many people here, as in Joplin and Japan with the tsunami, who have lost everything and that is very tough to come back from—something the US community already knows from Hurricane Katrina a few years back.
Again– I hope every one is OK!
I’m just happy that you are safe and maybe the library is ok, too.
