Another Book Quote for Saturday from Ursula Le Guin
“…the story boat is a magic one. It knows its course. The job of the person at the the helm is to help it to find it’s own way to wherever it’s going.”
~ Ursula Le Guin, Steering The Craft
—
As I said last week, Ursula Le Guin’s, Steering The Craft, a book on writing subtitled “Exercises and Discussions on Story Writing for the Lone Navigator or the Mutinous Crew” is Absolutely My Favourite Work on the art, and craft, bloodstained toil, and sheer joy of writing.
And as this quote so perfectly expresses how the writing process ‘is’ for me, I just had to share it with you today.
I’m not surprised Steering the Craft appeals so strongly to a poet! It focuses on the nuts and bolts of language and the beauty of words much more than any other writing how-to I’ve read. You make me want to get it out and do some of the exercises again!
Ah, interesting you should make the comment re language and the beauty of words given the quote I have selected for this Saturday… 😉 Yet interestingly, outright beauty of language is not the first thing I think of in relation to Le Guin, as opposed to authors like McKillip and Kay. I am always impressed by her combined economy and elegance of language.
