WORDChristchurch Excitement Continues: I Welcome Fellow Hachette Author, Laini Taylor
The WORDChristchurch Writers and Readers Festival is in full swing and there’s no let up in the giddy whirl! 😉
This week, I’ve welcomed welcome fellow Hachette authors, Diane Setterfield (Monday) and Yrsa Sigurðardóttir (Thursday), to NZ and the festival.
Today I anticipate Sunday’s “Supernaturally” event—and also extend the same warm welcome to my third and final fellow Hachette author, Laini Taylor.

Welcoming Laini Taylor to WORDChristchurch
Laini Taylor is the Portland, Oregon author of the bestselling, YA Fantasy trilogy, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, about Karou, a blue-haired art student and monster’s apprentice, caught between this world and an alternate world where angels and monsters are locked in desperate and unforgiving war.
Her novel Lips Touch: Three Times, was a silver medal finalist for the 2009 National Book Award — and a host of other accolades.
Here’s a little more of what Laini has to tell you about herself:
“I am a writer-artist-daydreamer-nerd-person, and simultaneously a mom-wife-sister-daughter-person. I can do a lot of things at once, like for example: I can sleep and dream and also lie very still, all while also breathing and ever-so-slowly growing ten distinct toenails…
Some of my favorite things are books and bookstores and breakfast food and mangoes and chocolate, and cake stands and table cloths and old houses, and going places (like libraries and other countries), and dreaming up stories.
Thank you for being here. I hope you like me.”
Thank you for visiting us, Laini: I think we will! 😉

Meanwhile, here’s a little more about the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, starting with the wonderful opening quote:
“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.”
Is your reading appetite whetted—it should be!
This from the NY Times Book Review:
“A breath-catching romantic fantasy about destiny, hope and the search for one’s true self that doesn’t let readers down … the world-building descriptions and language stop your heart and then, like a defibrillator, start it up again.”
— for A Daughter Of Smoke and Bone
“Plunges us into a world of beauty and horror… intricately plotted… it’s a book that flies between worlds on blood-tipped wings and grips like a magical vice.”
— for Days Of Blood and Starlight
While the Guardian review included this:
.
“So can we just talk about the awesomeness of this book? Laini has managed to go above and beyond the expectations I had (and I had many). “
— for Dreams Of Gods And Monsters
