My new post series on SF Signal, “Fantasy Heroines That Rock My World”, is rocking on with the third instalment posting this week.
This week’s heroine under the spotlight is another longstanding favourite, Raederle of An from Patricia McKillip’s Heir Of Sea And Fire (Book 2 in The Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy.)
“In The Riddlemaster of Hed (the first book in the trilogy), the reader knows Raederle only by reputation. She is “the Second Most Beautiful Woman” in An, the daughter of its King, and promised since birth to whoever wins an otherwise deadly riddle game. This, of course, turns out to be Morgon: so far, so traditional fairytale fare, very much placing Raederle in the same company as Arwen in The Lord Of The Rings.
