Support A NZ Short Film: “A Son’s Return Home” — Fundraiser
“Absolutely moving, this must be made.” — NZ Film Commission Assessor
I’m excited to be sharing the fundraising campaign for A Son’s Return Home, a NZ short film project, with you today.
A Son’s Return Home is one of September’s projects on the Boosted (Te Tumu Toi: The (NZ) Arts Council) fundraising platform.
The reason I’m featuring it today is because the scriptwriter, Janine Sowerby, is a friend of very longstanding. So of course I want to support her project — although as you can see from the above quote, its merits have also been recognized by more qualified, and dispassionate, observers.
The A Son’s Return Home Story Overview
“Absolutely moving, this must be made.” — NZ Film Commission Assessor
Just after WW1, a traumatised young man arrives at the farmhouse of a family whose son was killed at Passchendaele. Each family member has been dealing with the devastating loss in their own way but the young man’s arrival stirs up intense emotions, forcing the family to confront their feelings or risk being torn apart.

Why “A Son’s Return Home” Is A Great Project To Support
A Son’s Return Home is a powerful human and historical story that is grounded in NZ’s WW1 experience but addresses universal themes, that resonate across cultures and generations.
The script was one of the top:
- 18, of 90, applications shortlisted by the New Zealand Film Commission for funding in 2022;
- 5 ‘graduates’ of all three stages of Script to Screen’s script development programme in 2021.
The story honours the service, and suffering, of the more than 100,000 New Zealanders who served overseas in WW1 — and recognises the impact of the war upon their families and communities.

The Boosted Campaign Goal
The Boosted campaign goal is to raise $15,000 to make this film.
The fundraiser is open for donations now and will continue until 30 September.
Boosted campaigns are always do-or-die efforts, i.e. if a project doesn’t make the funding target, it gets nothing. If that happens, donors will get their donation refunded — but I think we’d all MUCH rather see this film made!
So if you feel you can give a little, or a lot, then please do click on the link and support a wonderful creative project:
