What I’m Reading: “Leaving The Tableland” & “Tymon’s Flight”
At the moment I am reading Kerry Popplewell’s Leaving the Tableland, a new poetry collection from Steele Roberts. The poems embody a keen observation of nature with strong elegaic themes and I am going to be interviewing Kerry soon for Women on Air, Plains 96.9 FM.
I am also quickly re-reading Mary Victoria’s Tymon’s Flight—ahead of our radio interview for next Saturday—which you may recall I first enjoyed a while back. Tymon’s Flight is new out from HarperCollins Voyager, so new in fact that Mary just celebrated her launch yesterday at the Weta Cave (yup, she’s a Wellywood, Weta Digital gal)—and Tymon’s Flight has already had a great review from Rebecca Fisher on FantasyLit.com
So how about you—what are you reading this weekend? Is it spinning your wheels and rocking your world? Or not so much?
I’m reading an ARC from Janice Hardy (won it in a competition) of the second book in her Healing Wars trilogy. Loving it. Also re-reading Neverwhere at the same time — just because I can. I’m very interested in reading Tymon’s Flight, too.
I love Neverwhere & I think you’ll enjoy Tymon’s Flight if you like more epic-style Fantasy. I haven’t read Janice Hardy yet, but it sounds as though you recommend.
I do. She has a page turning style that’s irresistible. It’s younger YA, and one of those books I studied and pulled to pieces to see how she wrote such great tension.
Wen, clearly Janice Hardy is a must read—consider her on my list!
I just finished reading Wind Warrior by Cynthia Roberts. It was a nice, pleasant read, but purely a romance while I had expected it to have other storylines too so that was a bit of a letdown.
I haven’t read Wind Warrior yet, but I tend to like romance as part of an adventurous or magical story, rather than the other way around. By the way, did you know that Wind Warrior is a Marvel comic heroine, as well—part of “Earth Force”?
I didn’t know that. I really should read up on my comics.
One of my favourites at present is Girl Genius Online—Adventure, Romance, Mad Science!—which is up for a Hugo Award this year (and won last year). Check it out, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! 🙂
Interesting list of books you’re reading. I enjoy mixing up genre and will put the poem book on my TBR list. Right now, I just started a non-fiction, spiritually based book called “Sun of gOd” by Gregory Sams. It’s takes a look at our universe in the light of a conscious Sun. So far, its easy to read and very thought provoking. I’m really enjoying it!
That does sound interesting, Betty–does it tie back/ tie in to any of the Egyptian ideas from the time of the Pharaoh Akhenaton, who tried to elevate the worship of the sun above the rest of the Egyptian pantheon? (Unsuccessfully, it has to be said.)
I’m very glad to hear that you are interviewing Kerry about “Leaving the Tableland” – I think it’s a really good collection that hasn’t had the publicity it deserves as yet, and I am glad that you and Plains FM are spreading the word!
Tim—spreading the good word is what we do best! 🙂
Sadly, no reading for me at the moment. I’m way too busy with the business side of life, but you are all helping me add to my list of future must-reads.
I understand busy–with Worldcon and the Christchurch Writers’ Fest plus all the ususal stuff it’s definitely ‘pedal to the metal’ (Galaxy Quest—check your geek cred!) But when you get a chance do try “Tymon’s Flight”.
