Avast Me Hearties!
Today is international “Talk Like a Pirate” day and to join in the fun I thought I’d list some favourite pirate reads:
Captain Blood Rafael Sabatini
Treasure Island Robert Louis Stevenson
Peter Pan J.M. Barrie
The Man Whose Mother Was A Pirate Margaret Mahy
The Princess Bride William Goldman
Missee Lee Arthur Ransome
The Hotel Under the Sand Kage Baker
How about you? What are your favourite pirate books?
Ooh, I had forgotten the book until you mentioned it but as a child I loved The Pirates’ Mixed Up Voyage by Margaret Mahy.
Also, when I was a kid there was an awesome Blackbeard graphic novel (kinda like a Tintin book style). Can’t remember who wrote it.
The Scar by Mieville probably counts too.
Was that graphic novel “Bloodthirsty Pirate Tales”? I hadn’t thought about Mieville’s The Scar—and clean forgot Tim Powers’ On Stranger Tides, which definitely rates inclusion (especially as I understand it’s to serve as the basis for the 4th Pirates of The Caribbean film).
And of course there is always the “Tales of the Black Freighter” story within a story from the original “Watchmen” graphic novel by Alan Moore.
Mind you this is a pretty dark story and definitely not one for the kids!
Well, it wasn’t meant to be just for kids necessarily, although the wraning is probably useful. Mind you, I think “Watchmen” is enough to give us the “pretty dark” anyway. 🙂
