Earthquake Report: Christchurch Gets Hammered Again
Just a quick note because I know that many of you will have heard that Chriscthurch got hammered again by a 5.5 and 6.0 magnitude earthqaukes this afternoon. Power has just come back on and I thought I would let you know that everyone here is ok, as are all the friends and family I have managed to get in contact with. If I haven’t yet responded to your texts and/or emails I will do very soon and …
… yes, both earthquakes were quite violent and to be honest, more than a little scary. We also have more liquefaction, to a reasonably significant level, although not anywhere near what we had last time. And not to the extent that the good citizens of Avondale experienced, where the roads turned into rivers.
At the moment though, I think I just need some time out to “process.” But all going well I’ll be back with my Tuesday Poem tomorrow.
Le sigh on your behalf. Thinking of you guys.
Good to hear you have power on, ours came back about 5 p.m. Yes, they were quite scary and I have to say that I had hoped that the prediction of a 23% possibility of another 6 to 7 would prove unfounded.
I just emailed you, then checked my blog list. Glad to hear you’re safe.
Glad to hear you are safe and OK.
I was wondering how you were too being on the side was closest and all.
Helen, I’m so sorry this has happened again. . . I wish there was something we could do from down here. I’m relieved to know you’re okay, but oh, oh, oh . . Sending love and supportive thoughts your way, Claire
Dear friends, thank you for your thoughts and comments. I will admit to struggling with this one—it just feels like being flung back to the bottom of the ladder again. Definitely not the go, and you do start to ask yourself how long you can carry on living in the situation, given a choice—and simply not knowing when it will all happen again.
Time for Mother Nature to go away and focus elsewhere.
Yes—except that I wouldn’t wish this on anyone else, so in some remote place is my plea!
Are there people in the Sahara Desert?
Or Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico? I think they’re uninhabited.
Jan, you have such a great sense of humour, but in fact I believe that all those places are inhabited, at least in parts. The Tuareg, I think, are one of the poeples of the Sahara and having just read an interview with Daniel Abrahams in which he claimed to hail from New Mexico, I feel reasonably certain that he at least does live there. And is much too fine a writer for me to wish him earthquakes! 😉
Dear dear Helen, What bad news after what good news about your novel award! I really only want to congratulate you but I also need to tell you that Mike & I are sending you our love and prayers. Again. Stay strong.
Nancy xx
Thank you, Nancy. I don’t feel particularly strong right now but all good wishes are very much appreciated.
I am glad you are ok. Its such a tough thing to have to go though again. Stay strong and know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Thank you so much, Donna.
Wow I can’t believe I didn’t hear about this… I hope everyone is alright.
Sometimes I think there have been so many earthquakes that the world is just becoming blase about it. And no one more has died from the February event so that mitigates against news coverage, too.
Actually, one person has died as a result of this quake. A resthome resident who fell over as he was being evacuated.
Yes, I think that news was released the day following this post, but you’re right: definitely good to note.
I’m so glad you’re okay, relatively speaking, Helen. We’re heading to Melbourne, it seems. Jayden needs a working hospital, and it wasn’t working on Monday when he needed it. I hate that these quakes are separating family and friends and changing lives so dramatically. I mean, seriously … two huge quakes in one day? What is this, Survivor?
Wen, I completely understand the desire to move. I think if we were in your situation with Jaydn, we would be making exactly the same decision. The news that there is a 30% chance of another 6.0 to 7.0 quake within the month is not exactly encouraging either.
I’m so glad you’re ok, Helen! I didn’t hear about the earthquake.
Yes, at third time around it’s not getting that much news coverage—and at plus 7000 total since last September, together with the tsunami in Japan, the cyclones in the States etc, we’re definitely old news.:)
I am happy to say that the South Librray has now reopened, which is great news.
