Just Arrived!
Books are arriving thick and fast at present and the current “just arrived” on my book table is Charlaine Harris’ Dead Reckoning, the latest in her Sookie Stackhouse series—more paranormal fun with Sookie, Eric, Bill, and the rest of the living, dead, and shapeshifting community of Bon Temps. Here’s the back cover blurb:
“There’s a reckoning on the way … and Sookie has a knack for being in trouble’s way, not least when she witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte’s, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is known to be two-natured, suspicion immediately falls on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but before she can investigate something else — something even more dangerous — comes up.
Sookie’s lover Eric Northman and his ‘child’ Pam are plotting something in secret. Whatever it is, they seem determined to keep Sookie out of it, almost as determined as Sookie is to find out what’s going on. She can’t sit on the sidelines when both her work and her love life under threat — but as she’s gradually drawn into their plans Sookie finds the situation is deadlier than she could ever have imagined.”
So what’s new on your book table? Or is there a book that you’re hoping to read soon but haven’t got to yet?
I have way too many books on my TBR pile. At the moment I am reading Ally Casrter’s Uncommon Criminals, then next on my list is Eona and see how I go from there. I love it when the new books arrive, its so good.
‘Uncommon Criminals’ and ‘Eona’ are both new titles for me–I shall have to check them out.
Well, thanks to you, Helen, I have a whole bunch of new books on my TBR pile that I’m really looking forward to 🙂 I haven’t actually read any of the Sookie Stackhouse books yet, but I’m definitely keen to.
Hey Wen, I am so glad the YA book package arrived safely—I do hope you enjoy! The Sookie books are usually fun but you have to start from ‘te beginning’ I think, with Dead Until Dark.
Snap I just picked up this book from the library yesterday, having been on the reserve list for a few weeks.
I’ll be interested to know what you think of it, Jacqui.
I read the first Sookie book and wasn’t impressed but loved the tv series. I’ve only seen season 1 though.
Why is Eric her lover? What happened to Bill? (though Eric is cuter)
Will have to add the Sookie books to my TBR piloe.
Jan, with respect to your questions, you have to follow the series to get the answers, but I will say that it evolves differently from the TV series in some key respects. The books are very ‘light’ but I like the character of Sookie so I like to ‘visit’ whenever a new book comes out.
I’ve got a couple of Irish YA fantasy/scifi books that I’m keen to get to this month. Peadar O’Guilin’s The Deserter and Oisin McGann’s Wisdom of Old Men. Both are the second books of expected trilogies. I’ve also picked up a new fairytale collection, My mother she killed me, my father he ate me, which has contributions from some leading lights such as Shirley Jackson, Neil Gaiman, Ludmilla Petrushevskaya etc.
Kerry, these all sound really interesting and not books I have even heard of over here. Are there links to sites about them?
I also live in NZ, read a lot of YA/children’s fiction, and wanted to try to read more fiction from Ireland. I picked up McGann’s Ancient Appetites as a remainder at The Warehouse. I liked it a lot and started following his blog, he is also an illustrator. O’Guilin’s most excellent first book, The Inferior, was on a list of what to read after Mockingjay last August at Tor.com. I then started following Peadar’s LJ blog (especially for the comments which can be extremely amusing at times).

Peadar put together a free e-book sampler for the launch of The Deserter: http://peadarog.livejournal.com/137770.html

The fairytale collection – I just saw someone mention it online. Here’s a link to a PANK magazine review: http://tinyurl.com/5r4jgs3
Thanks for all the links, Kerry—I like to spread the good word of all the great speculative fiction ‘out there.’ 😉
