Tuesday Poem: A Podcast Interview With Bernadette Hall, Editor of “Best New Zealand Poems 2011”
As my Tuesday Poem feature today, I am linking to my recent Women on Air inteview with Bernadette Hall, editor of Best New Zealand Poems 2011.
I feel Bernie gives us a fascinating insight into the process of selecting last year’s “crown of good company” in New Zealand poetry — as well as concluding with a powerful reading of James Norcliffe’s The Death of Seneca.

Both were published in her 2009 collection, The Lustre Jug (Victoria University Press)

Wonderful to be introduced to your interview, Helen, and to this great discussion and fine poetry. I love the idea that the “Best Of” collection contains new voices as well as known writers. I really like the way Bernadette talks about the collection. Good look at how anthologies work and the problematic of “best” as well as the very clear emphasis on the subjectivity of the editor/judge’s task. I like the way she likes poetry that “unsettles” and asks questions. Very interesting indeed. Thanks for posting this.
Michelle, I’m glad you enjoyed the interview–I very much enjoyed talking with Bernie about how she put the anthology together and selected the poems that were ‘the crown of good company’ for her. I have also just finished an interview with Helen Heath about her collection “Graft” (VUP), which should be on podcast within a few weeks.
