At a guess – Rohan.
It looks like the South Island of NZ.
Clearly this is too easy. 😉 But yes, it is indeed the Westfold of Rohan as seen in the early parts of The Two Towers film. And I’ve been there: w00t!
*Jealous*
But, of course, my friend Scott, who has Tolkien’s work in his blood, is versed enough to point out where the movie terrain *doesn’t* match up with the books.
To be honest, I agree with your friend re “Rohan.” The descriptions in the book are far more of the English rolling green down country, from my recollection. But in terms of the films, this is the Westfold country…
