Epic fantasy has indeed gained more popularity during the last decade. I think that one of the reasons why it has become increasingly popular among fantasy readers is that several new novels are of high quality (nowadays authors tend to avoid the most typical clichés, write original fantasy and create interesting characters).
That’s heartening to hear, especially from one who reads so widely in the genre.
