And It’s Out: “The House At The End of The Sea”
May 2 was a red letter date, being publication day for The House At The End of the Sea, by my friend and fellow author, Victoria M Adams.
I first mentioned The House At The End of the Sea in February, when I received an advance copy and shared that I had read an even earlier proof copy and provided a quote for the inside cover:
“The House at the End of the Sea has it all: characters to cheer for, worldbuilding that weaves together the fantastical and the everyday, and magic that is curious, double-edged, and fraught with consequence. Definitely a story that kept me reading! HELEN LOWE”
Today, though, it’s time to hear from the author herself:
“A book is a slice of life caught in amber.
First of all, the years spent writing and learning to write. Study, rough drafts, abandoned manuscripts, trial and error and blood and sweat and tears, the process of becoming.
After that, time spent on the publishing journey: querying agents, working to make the ms as good as it could be, submitting that ms to editors. That process took two years from start to finish for this book. Thank you to @sarabookcrazy , my lovely agent… Without you, none of this would be.
After that came a crucial period, working with the team at @andersenpress on structural edits, copy-edits, line edits and proofs. They took this book to the next level, commissioned art by @sharonkingchai , designed a cover, came up with all the lovely touches that make a physical book such a joy to read. They sent advance reader copies to amazing writers, who responded with extraordinary kindness. I am so grateful: @sinead.ohart , @skyemc_kenna , @elen_caldecott , @dianemagras , @stephcampisi , Helen Lowe… Without you, none of this would be.
But the amber contains something else. Remember how it felt as a child, when you didn’t so much read a tale as plunge in, live and breathe it? When you were quite happy to believe in worlds hidden behind wardrobe doors? I wanted to give that feeling to every young reader who picks up this book. (There is still magic in the world. Believe it.)
So – for the kid in your life who wants to believe – or for the kid inside you: Have this little piece of magic, from me.
Thank you to Frank Victoria for the book trailer. Your belief in me is yet more magic…”
