About The Characters: Meet The Minor Players In “The Wall Of Night” Series — Meet Nerion
The About The Characters post series focuses on the minor characters in The Wall Of Night series, in large part because:
“I think it’s the presence of the smaller characters that “makes” a story, creating texture around the main points of view.”
~ from my Legend Award Finalist’s Interview, 2013
Initially, the series focused exclusively on characters from The Heir of Night, but now I’m continuing on with minor characters from both The Gathering Of The Lost and Daughter of Blood — in alphabetical order, by name, of course!
Currently we’re rolling through “N” — and today’s character, Nerion, is one of a select number that are technically “minor” in terms of their page time, but cast a major shadow in terms of influence on the story.
Those of you who’re WALL afficionados will know that she is the exiled mother of the main character, Malian of Night. Nerion’s role in The Heir of Night and The Gathering of the Lost is largely off-camera, but she is beginning to step out of the shadows in Daughter of Blood.

Nerion: former wife to Earl Tasarion of Night and mother to Malian, the Heir of Night; exiled from the House of Night to Adamant, from which she fled to the Swarm of Dark.
“Commander, are you sure?” Aeln demanded. “You heard how they insulted Night! Surely only blood can answer such words?”
…
“Technically,” Asantir said, “they did not insult Night—much as they sought to do so—since the Old Earl formally expelled Lady Nerion from our ranks.”

Malian gazed into the blaze, thinking about her life’s journey to this point, which of course had begun with Nerion, even if she could not remember her mother at all. What would she look like, Malian wondered, if I glimpsed her in the flames?
