The Quakes Go On …
Well, I’m back home in Christchurch—where the quakes go on!
One would never like to miss out on any of the excitement, so it was good to get back in time for the little series last night: 3.2, 3.8 and 4.7, all quite shallow and in fairly quick succession. I even cracked one eye open for the last one, which was at 1.30 in the morning and had the bed going up and down like a ship at sea.
As aforesaid, I wouldn’t have wanted to miss any of the earthshaking fun—and yup, so far the grand total stands at 2903 quakes since the big one on September 4.
Anyway, here’s a few more photos from around the neighbourhood, just to “illustrate” the stats a little …
It was a good one, last night. I didn’t feel the first one, but definitely felt the next two. I guess things aren’t as quiet yet as it seemed!
When you check the quake map, there’s still been quite a few every day, but I think they’ve been quite small and also we’re getting used to them, so don’t notice as much. But last night’s effort being quite shallow and quite close (Halswell)—well, you just do, don’t you?
Last night I was ironing, and hadn’t finished, and wondered if I really needed to bother putting the iron away, since things seemd to be getting quieter. I was glad I did! If anything’s going to fall over, it would be an iron left out on a tall narrow ironing board.
It definitely affects every aspect of life, that’s for sure!
My goodness. Still? I hope things quieten soon and that the earth moves only metaphorically from here on in.
Well, they do seem to be easing off, but very slowly—and apparently this is not unusual, just not well reported in a media sense.
Lord, STILL? Or rather, not still at all… 🙁
I don’t like feeling that the media has decided this is ‘old news’. Grrr. Thinking of you guys…
Far from over, as the wee small hours 4.7 has just been followed by a 4.8 around 7.30 pm, centered in the same area (Halswell.) But in the terms of being old news—with no dead and few serious injuries, the Christchurch earthquake was probably never news at all. And even Haiti with its colossal death toll and consequent deprivation of large numbers of people hasn’t stayed in the news. I think as people we can only focus for so long on ‘disaster’ or even ‘difficulty’ and then we have to get on with the business of living …
I can’t even imagine what it would be like to live with that everyday. At this point it might make everyone nervous if things suddenly got very quiet and still .
It really does—and not unreasonably since apparently lots of small earthquakes means that it is ‘less likely’ there will be another really big one. 🙁
Nearly 3000!
Gulp.
Hope Mother Nature settles down soon.
3090 now! But only 3 quakes today. 🙂
