Just Arrived: “The Ocean At the End Of The Lane” by Neil Gaiman
This is the book that everyone seems to be talking about right now and it’s on my TBR table: w00t!
Here’s what the backcover blurb says:
“It began for our narrator forty years ago when the family lodger stole their car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond the world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed – within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it.
His only defense is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is an ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang.
THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE is a fable that reshapes modern fantasy: moving, terrifying and elegiac – as pure as a dream, as delicate as a butterfly’s wing, as dangerous as a knife in the dark…”

Really keen to read this – hope my bookstore has it on the shelf (they should) as I’m really, really keen to read it. So much so that I’m repeating myself ๐
Have you read much yet, Helen?
I am now up to page 71 and enjoying very much so far–and btw, Neil Gaiman can unquestionably write horror. Also, although a slim volume and despite having a young protagonist, am pretty sure it’s written for adults not kids.
Thanks, Helen – fantastic to hear. Curious about the horror elements too, almost apprehensive ๐
Just picked it up today, can’t wait to start – read the very first page, the small one, and already keen to get back to it!
Within my ‘horror’ tolerance levels, Ashley, so I think you’ll be fine. ๐
So far, it’s a great read.
Just finished it this morning and very happy, very satisfied ๐
Really enjoyed the follow-up after the ending too – and the horror elements were perfect!
Enjoyed chatting with you about it too, thanks, Helen !
I need to read on, but often when I’m writing the reading takes a back seat. But I agree re the horror elements to date and I have been really ‘feeling’ them… superb!
As for chatting — always good to talk books! ๐
