Sunrise In The Southern Hemisphere
Worldbuilding is central to the art and craft of writing Speculative* Fiction but it never pays to lose sight of the real world. ๐
In this case the sun rises out of the Southern Ocean, which is part of the immensity of Te Moananui A Kiwa: the great ocean of Kiwa, aka the Pacific. In this case, the sunrise is off the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island (Te Wai Pounamu — The Waters of Greenstone), making it among the earliest places in the world to see the new day. The birds on the shingle banks are parekareka, the NZ spotted shag (a species of cormorant): scientific name Stictocarbo punctatus.

The sun rises out of the Southern Ocean…
A little bit of world and worldbuilding inspiration for all our weeks. ๐
*Speculative Fiction: Although I would argue that all fiction is speculative, the specific term is now applied to the literature of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror in all its diversity and excellence.
stunning! Helen. Thank you for this.
Glad you liked it, Helen — & great to hear from you, too. ๐ Stay well.
You are very fortunate to be able to see a sun rise above an ocean. It is a lovely view to have.
I love being able to get away and write in such places as often as I can. But home base in Christchurch, however much the garden city still, is very much a city on the plain.I find it helps the muse enormously.
